This is the most wonderful book! I only wish that it had been around when I had cancer. It is one of the most comprehensive cancer guides I have ever come across. It is written simply so the average lay person can read and understand and has enough information to attract a pro.
The first part of this guide is all about cancer therapies and their side effects. It starts with conventional therapies, explaining each one and the pro's and con's of each. Chapter 2 is about managing side effects. The third chapter is on complementary cancer care. Part 2 is about keeping cancer at bay, and Part 3 is menu planning for side effect management. Part 4 is recipes.
The book is filled with charts about everything, for example, the different cancer drugs, how they are used, administered, and side effects and nutritional information for each drug listed. There is a similar charts on appetite medications, food sources of fiber, lactose content of common foods, food sources of protien, grains, food sources of various vitamins and minerals and many more charts that are too numerous to list here.
There are guidelines for dealing with side effects, like dry mouth, diarrhea, fatigue, and food aversion. There are also guidelines for dealing with depression, diabetes and how it effects cancer, mouth sores, nausea, weight loss, weight gain, and wound healing. Interspersed between pages are FAQ's that contain common questions and answers that cancer patients have. There are little tip boxes scattered throughout containing "Survivor Wisdom", and "Did you know?" which gives facts about the cancer experience.
Complementary cancer care is also addressed and there is a chart listing the type of complementary system, its practices and explaining what it is. In the back of the book there are 150 delicious recipes. Most of the recipes are fairly easy to prepare and they look appetizing. LaMantia, and Berinstein have done an excellent job in putting all of this relevant information together and for anyone who has cancer this is MUST READ. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas
