5.0 étoiles sur 5 Homemade skin care products from beneficial essential oils - 4 stars 12 juin 2013

Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
I had no idea what a hot topic essential oils have become until I searched for "essential oil" in the Books department at Amazon and got almost 21,000 hits. In "Essential Oils Beauty Secrets," author Pamesh Y approaches this popular subject by claiming that our bodies are not meant to absorb the chemicals in products we apply to our skin all day, products ranging from toothpaste to cosmetics. The book advocates that we detoxify our bodies, beginning with our skin, by replacing chemical cosmetics with natural products that contain so-called "essential oils" - natural oils that are extracted from plants. These oils are well absorbed by the skin and hair, and can even be inhaled (aromatherapy).

The book focuses on the benefits of essential oils to the skin, hair, and nails, plus secondary benefits such as promoting deep sleep, relieving colds and sore throat, and in massage to relax muscles and relieve muscle aches. There's a list of the twenty most effective oils, with several that are well known (chamomile, olive oil, and coconut oil), and some that aren't so well known (hemp seed oil, myrrh, and sandalwood). The book cautions against using some well known oils that have deleterious effects on the skin. It's noted that some beneficial oils are too concentrated to use in undiluted form, so these need to be diluted with "carrier oils" such as olive oil or sunflower oil.

The book gives instructions on how to determine your own skin type and hair type, followed by more than forty recipes for making your own skin care products with essential oils. Some of the ingredients are fairly exotic, and I think the book would have been a bit more helpful if the author had given some sources for obtaining these ingredients. That's my only negative comment about the book. Otherwise, the book is full of practical information for anyone wanting to eliminate or reduce the amount of potentially harmful chemicals their body is absorbing, and make their own skin care products from naturally-occurring essential oils.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Dreadful mistakes and minsinformation! 12 janvier 2014

Before writing a book about essential oils an author should, at the very least, know the difference between an essential oil and a carrier (fixed) oil. Listing Almond Oil, Argan oil, Coconut oil as essential oils shows the total ingnorance of the subject matter. Describing an essentail oil, let's say "Chamomile Oil" without specifying WHICH Chamomile reveals even more unfamiliarity with the subject matter. It gets worse, the further I read. "Carrot only works if used alone" The author starts off by saying that essential oils must be diluted, but then says it only works if used alone. I have NO idea what source material this author is using, but he needs to burn those books and buy some of the EXCELLENT references on aromatherapy and skincare available today.
I can't stop reading. "Clary Sage Oil - due to the potency of this oil it is highly recommended to avoid mixing with other ingredients." "Geranium: to avoid skin irritations, it is best used alone."
I went further. I read the suggested skincare formulas offered. PLEASE do not try any formula in this book. They are a roadmap to disaster. An example: Peppermint Shampoo for dry hair: 7 oz Spring water, 1 oz liquid castile soap and FIVE tbsp Peppermint oil. (That is 2.5 fl ounces of peppermint oil.) Boil the water, add the liquid castile and stir until boiling. Continue stirring to dissolve the liquid soap. Add 5 tbsp peppermint oil and stirr for three minutes. Remove from stove and pour into a glass bottle. (Good thing it calls for glass, that much peppermint oil would dissolve a plastic bottle.) Cover tightly, label properly. Use this to shampoo your hair."
The quality of the writing indicates that perhaps English is not this writer's first language. This could be overlooked if the information were worth having; instead the book is filled with bizarre formulas that could do damage to anyone trying them. I wish I could give negative stars!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 interesting recipes 16 août 2013

I thought this book was interesting and I will try a few recipes. However, I have trouble with books that don't appear to have been reviewed for errors before publishing. I read the Kindle version. I often wonder if these errors also appear in the print version. For instance, the recipe for Chamomile Lavender Sugar Scrub for Combination Skin lists both salt and lavender twice with no amounts given for sugar or chamomile. Obviously, one of the salt amounts should be for sugar and one of the lavenders should be chamomile. Another ingredient line in the same recipe says "1/2 baking soda". 1/2 what? Cup? Tablespoon?

The author also lists several essential oils that should only be used alone, then proceeds to use several of these in recipes where they are combined with other essential oils. This was frustrating. An explanation as to why she was breaking her rule about their use would have added credibility.

In summary, it was interesting but I would have preferred if the author had paid more attention to detail while writing the book.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 The author is not very knowledgeable about essential oils 6 mars 2014

The author seems to be very confused about the difference between essential oils and expressed fatty oils. Oils such as argan oil and evening primrose oil are not essential oils. This book is full of many errors and I do not recommend it for anyone who is serious about learning about essential oils. In fact a great many of the recipes for skin care products she provides in this book don't contain any essential oils whatsoever. There are a great many books available that would be far more helpful than this one.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Natural ways to tend to your integument and body and peace of mind! 8 juin 2013

Satendra is an Engineer from India who happens to also be a health and beauty expert whose pen name is Pamesh Y. In this very accessible book we discover the secrets of essential oils, their sources, the history of their uses, and then specific uses of these oils in caring for the body and mind. It is elegant and it is charming, and with some practice this book should replace many of the far more expensive potions on the cosmetic shelves!

Essential oils are natural oils that are extracted from plants. Unlike actual oils, essential oils do not contain fatty acids. Instead, these are highly concentrated plant elements, which possess potent qualities for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The author stresses the importance of replacing the `chemical' cosmetic substances with these naturally occurring oils and shows us how to created recipes for the many uses for which these essential oils are designed. As stated in the introduction, `We are living in a chemical world...from toothpaste in the morning to makeup cleaner at night.' Nature has not designed our body to absorb all these chemicals, so what is happening is our body is accumulating toxic materials daily and these foreign materials are toxins we should purify form our body and replace them with natural substance that accomplish the same desired effect.

Just the listing of the names of these essential oils is soothing - Jojoba Oil, Evening Primrose, Almond Oil, Lavender Rose, Sandalwood, Eucalyptus, Chamomile, Tea Tree, Jasmine - each of these have anti aging qualities to enhance skin, hair, nails, eyes, body massage, etc. After a fine introduction to the aspects of each of these and their uses, the author offers recipes for blending products in our home that assure us we are applying only safe and natural oils to our body's health.

The book is warmly written, though an editor who could correct the grammar and phrasing and spelling would be helpful. But with that small criticism aside, this is a wealth of knowledge shared by someone who has obviously done the research! Grady Harp, June 13
