Présentation de l'éditeur

Understand and implement VMware Virtual SAN: the heart of tomorrow’s Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC)

VMware’s breakthrough Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC) initiative can help you virtualize your entire datacenter: compute, storage, networks, and associated services. Central to SDDC is VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN): a fully distributed storage architecture seamlessly integrated into the hypervisor and capable of scaling to meet any enterprise storage requirement.

Now, the leaders of VMware’s wildly popular Virtual SAN previews have written the first authoritative guide to this pivotal technology. You’ll learn what Virtual SAN is, exactly what it offers, how to implement it, and how to maximize its value.

Writing for administrators, consultants, and architects, Cormac Hogan and Duncan Epping show how Virtual SAN implements both object-based storage and a policy platform that simplifies VM storage placement. You’ll learn how Virtual SAN and vSphere work together to dramatically improve resiliency, scale-out storage functionality, and control over QoS.

Both an up-to-the-minute reference and hands-on tutorial, Essential Virtual SAN uses realistic examples to demonstrate Virtual SAN’s most powerful capabilities. You’ll learn how to plan, architect, and deploy Virtual SAN successfully, avoid gotchas, and troubleshoot problems once you’re up and running.

Coverage includes

  • Understanding the key goals and concepts of Software-Defined Storage and Virtual SAN technology
  • Meeting physical and virtual requirements for safe Virtual SAN implementation

5.0 étoiles sur 5 You will USE this book. 11 juillet 2014

Some books you buy to read, others you buy to use. This is a book that you will use.

I had a chance to use the "rough cut" version of the this book to help learn about VSAN and educate others on the use of it. As VSAN is a nascent technology there simple isn't a lot of information out there about it; this book fills that gap. It takes you through installation, configuration and management of VSAN as well as the all important troubleshooting of it. As a disclaimer I have worked with, and have been instructed by Cormac (one of the authors) and his instructional experience really shows through in this book from the crisp clear directions to its depth of knowledge about storage. The other author is Duncan who's blog "yellow-bricks" is a go-to site for many in the virtualization field. This is an approachable book for the novice and a great reference for the experienced IT professional.

Another great feature of this book is its many examples of sizing VSAN environments, including one on sizing for a scale-out VSAN cluster environment.

If you are going to use, or are thinking of using VSAN this is a must have book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 In my opinion, this is a must have resource for any serious vSphere administrator! 18 août 2014

This is probably the quickest I have ever finished a technical book and I have to say, Cormac and Duncan has done a fantastic job! Not only is the content both information/educational but it also provides examples of real world scenarios to help readers really understand all the aspects of how to properly design and build a robust VSAN environment.

Essential VSAN is more than just a what/how of VSAN but also provides practical information that can be used by any beginner or seasoned vSphere Administrator. The book contains so many useful nuggets of best practices for managing, configuring, troubleshooting and inter-operating VSAN with other VMware based solutions. In my opinion, this is a must have resource for any serious vSphere administrator!

Even for someone like myself who has spent a considerable amount of time testing and evaluating VSAN, I too have learned a couple of new things after reading the book that I did not know before. The technical content is super high in caliber and more importantly, it is also very easy to digest whether you are technical or just someone curious about VMware’s latest SDS Solution. I really have to say the authors has done just an amazing job and congrats again on releasing your book!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Essential for Virtual SAN 31 août 2014
Par Lil lil - Publié sur Amazon.com
Just completed reading Essential Virtual San and let me say that it is undeniably essential to not only understanding, but properly sizing and troubleshooting a VSAN environment. This books takes you from basic concepts of a 3 node cluster and the underlying services that make vsan possible, to the thought process involved in creating a perfect Scale Out VSAN cluster. I was impressed with the detail and time put into this book to ensure that Storage Admin's that may be skeptical of the performance are truly able to get in and verify via Web or CLI to determine how the VSAN storage components are behaving. Can't say enough great things about the book. I for one am truly excited to start building a Greenfield Test/Dev VSAN solution and prove to most out there why VSAN is right for them.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Thinking about or using VSAN? This is the book for you 26 novembre 2014

If you are at all interested in VSAN you owe it to yourself to read this book. Cormac and Duncan are two of the top resources on VSAN and they've put together a fantastic book. It covers everything from the basics of VSAN, prerequisites, installation and basic configuration, storage policies (a critical part of understanding VMware's vision of SDDC in general and VSAN/VVOLs in particular), architectural details (lots of helpful details here), management and maintenance, interoperability, VSAN design and a full chapter on troubleshooting.

In addition to loads of great technical detail, this book is well written and put together. Chapters are arranged logically, writing is clear and to the point and they maintain focus on the defined scope of the book.

Buy this book, you'll be glad you did.

This will give a real good in depth over view of VSAN. If you haven't implemented it in the past I would say this would be a good book to go over before design and implementation. I would highly recommend this book.
