One negative review complains about the standard "program" format, which I find extremely effective for learning detailed factual material.
It seems MBA programs are recommending this book for pre-MBA summer study -- a brilliant idea. I still have my 3rd edn copy. There are few books I think this highly of, though I read an average of 60 non-fiction books per year. I am looking at the book today to get the reference for a recommendation to my own daughter who is a lawyer and wants to do self-study to increase her career strength. Work hard and prosper!
If you doubt me, do a Google search of "Essentials of accounting 11th ed errata" and you will find that other people have already attempted to scale this mountain. However, it gets even harder in that there were multiple printings of the 11th edition and changes were made from printing to printing. I have found that my text omits sections that exist in those of my peers and vice versa.
Absolutely useless for a person who is new to finance and accounting! DON'T BUY IT. If your instructor tells you it's required, show them the errata issues!
