Présentation de l'éditeur

On 30 January 1981 Joe Tasker and Ade Burgess stood at 24,000 feet on the west ridge of Mount Everest. Below them were their companions, some exhausted, some crippled by illness, all virtually incapacitated. Further progress seemed impossible. Everest the Cruel Way is Joe Tasker’s story of an attempt to climb the highest mountain on earth – an attempt which pushed a group of Britain’s finest mountaineers to their limits. The goal had been to climb Mount Everest at its hardest: via the infamous west ridge, without supplementary oxygen and in winter. Tasker’s epic account vividly describes experiences which no climber had previously endured. Close up and personal, it is a gripping account of day to day life on expedition and of the struggle to live at high altitude. Joe Tasker was one of Britain’s best mountaineers. He was a pioneer of lightweight, Alpine-style climbing in the Greater Ranges and had a special talent for writing. He died, along with his friend Peter Boardman, high on Everest in 1982 while attempting a new and unclimbed line. Both men were superb mountaineers and talented writers.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Poor grammar makes this a "cruel" read. 10 février 2015

I cannot recommend this book. The grammar is absolutely atrocious to the point of making it "cruel" to read. For example, the author sprinkles commas so indiscriminately that it is difficult to read even a single paragraph without getting frustrated. In addition, the scene changes from Camp 1 to Camp 3 and back again with no warning, so one never quite knows where the action is taking place. Of course, this should take nothing away from Joe Tasker' incredible skill and bravery and his tragic death on Everest.

Calling it "the cruel way" was quite the understatement - a truly godawful experience, the only positive aspect of which was that they all came out of it alive. That time. The story really is riveting, but the numerous typos, grammatical errors punctuation errors, and poor layout (ragged right margins, virtually no paragraph indent) drove me crazy. Someone needs to do a massive editing job on this e-book. Not changing a word, of course. But fixing the layout.

A gripping read by a talented author made poignant by his untimely death on Everest a year or so later. The etext was full of punctuation errors.

This was the most poorly edited book I have ever read, and I read a lot. It was so bad that it was constantly irritating and distracting. Periods, commas, colons, dashes were inserted where they didn't belong on almost every page. Words were misspelled, spaces between words wrongly placed. I am appalled that it got through a publisher. It's a disgrace to the writer and publisher.
The story was only average, with an anti-climactic ending.
I rated it a '2' instead of '1' only because I learned a few things about the climbing process.

Loved this book. Climbers made a huge effort to climb Everest West Ridge in winter. Wonderful details of the climb with the terrible winds and snows, snow caves to try to survive in, and various illnesses plagued the expedition. After 3 months, they had to make a decision as to whether to continue trying to summit. Read the book to see if they were successful or not!
