- Gifted, merci The Weeknd

I waited how long for this? Holy let down. Mix tapes are wayyy better... these beats arent even that good, slow grinding out gangster beats with organ.... yawn.... cmon. wheres the heavy Harry Fraud stuff, the beats like the last mixtape and on Trouble? i only downloaded the first song, b/c thats decent. and thats it. one stinking song.
shame on you Montana for crapping out like Jay-Z and Kanye and putting out a crap album.. congrats.. pff.
I'll go back to my Rockie Fresh and be just fine.

I heard about French Montana years ago, obviously from watching the street DVDs when he used to interview people. I didn't start listening to his music until he released his "Mac Wit The Cheese" mixtape, being a Max B fan you were bound to listen to French since they had so many songs together. Then the beef they had with Jim Jones and ByrdGang was hilarious! French had the perfect set-up, he put out Shot Caller as a warm up single, then Pop That. I'm confused as to why Bad Boy didn't release the album at that time because "Pop That" was a hit. Its about a year later and some of the momentum has died down. I wonder why there aren't any beats from Harry Fraud or Dame Grease on here and they were part of some of French's biggest mixtape songs. He was also on Akon's Konvict Label a few years ago and signed Mizay Ent before the Bad Boy deal.

The biggest knock people have against French is that he isn't "lyrical", well if you were familiar with his past music then why would you even expect to hear some deep super lyrical type stuff? I'm not saying lyrics shouldn't matter, but everything doesn't have to lyrical, some people just want music to chill to or play loud in their whips. To each its own. One thing I did notice though is since Max B been locked up French changed his sound to whichever artist he affiliated himself with. When he linked up with Waka and Gucci, he started making trap music and put out the "Mister 16 (Casino Life)", the same thing happened when he linked up with Ross, he started doing chanty hooks and following the Southern sound. But it worked it for him and got his name out there more.

"Once in a While" starts the album off with Max B talking on the intro, followed by a sample of Kanye West's "Barry Bonds", French even flips 50 Cents "Your Lifes On The Line" hook. Its definitely a dope track and it sets the tone for the rest of the album. One thing French has always been good at is making catchy hooks, "Ain't Worried About Nothin'" produced by Earl & E and Rico Love and the J Oliver produced I Told Em are proof of that. I'm surprised he didn't do more of the hooks himself. The Weeknd brings his falsetto to one of the standout tracks "Gifted", if the label was smart they would make this next single because definitely it has potential to be a hit.

The Jalil Beats produced "Trap House"(featuring Birdman & Rick Ross) is a street anthem, all three of them did their thing. Some classic Hip-Hop songs get sampled, The Diplomats "I Really Mean It", gets sampled on "F*** What Happens Tonight" DJ Khaled, Mavado, Ace Hood, Snoop Dogg & Scarface), the beat is slightly different from the original but it still has those triumphant horns and drums. Some people might look at the artist and say that's a weird collaboration, but the trust me the song goes hard and nobody sounds out of place on it. "We Go Where Ever We Want"(featuring Ne-Yo & Raekwon) samples Raekwons classic "Ice Cream" and it also a standout track.

Overall French does has some missteps, he tries to go the dancehall route on "Freaks"(featuring Nicki Minaj), but the song never really caught on, it came and went. I could not get into "Paranoid", Young Cash came off as a Future knockoff, especially in the beginning. "Drink Freely"(featuring Rico Love) is okay but they had a better collaboration on "Grownups" off French's Mac & Cheese 3 mixtape and speaking of that mixtape, its clearly better than this album. It feels as though French put all of his best material on that mixtape. The album is solid, its not wack but it wont really make you a fan. I'm still a fan, but when he puts out another album, I wanna see some growth instead of him sticking to the same old sound.

HASH(0x9fc102d0) étoiles sur 5 I expected so much more from this :/ 22 mai 2013

Have heard almost off of French Montana's tracks to date, so of course I purchased the album as soon as I could. I had certain tracks that dropped on Worldstar before the album release, like "Trouble", that I expected to be on the album and was disappointed a little. I mean, you want all the songs on an album to be new and unheard, so since I'd already heard "Trouble" and a few others, I wasn't sad when they weren't on there - I was just disappointed that the tracks that were on there were not as good. A lot of the songs have the "pop" feel, and are a little plain.

Of course, there's a few tracks I like on the album - but a small minority. I honestly had hopes that this would be one of those "every song on the album is awesome" kind of CD but was sadly mistaken. I don't even recommend it for French Montana fans XD

If you have ever heard French Montana, you know what to expect from this album. You know going in that this isn't going to change the game. That being said, most of it isn't even very fun to listen to.

If you're simply looking for music to rattle your trunk, this may suffice. If you're looking for music with a voice, something with substance, look somewhere else. It's not all terrible - Raekwon's feature sounds great, Jerimih's hook works well with the smooth "Ballin' Out", and The Weeknd's track "Gifted" grows on you.

Overall, another mediocre hip hop album in a sea of them so far in 2013.

Stand out tracks:
Gifted feat. The Weeknd
Ballin' Out feat. Jerimeh & Diddy
We Go Wherever We Want feat. Ne-Yo & Raekwon
Drink Freely feat. Rico Love

Final Score: 2.0/5

HASH(0x9fc10780) étoiles sur 5 Theres No Excuse For This Album (Rating: 4 out of 10- -2.0 stars) 2 août 2013
Par Chandler - Publié sur Amazon.com

You would think this album being supported by two large hip hop labels, Bad Boy, and Maybach Music Group, and the fact that this album had gotten pushed back so much that there would have been something better than this. Also along with the fact that French Montana did so good with his mixtapes, building up a buzz for this release, I am for one am disappointed that this is the best that we get. French Montana is an artist with street appeal, but here he does not show it. I understand that you can't be too thugged out, or your records won't sell, but here he is completely pop oriented. Credit him for coming out with many singles ready to get spins on the radio or club, but this whole album he says very little. In this case would be the song "Ain't Worried About Nothin'" which is catchy, but he doesn't say anything. I hate to admit that this song is a guilty pleasure. Obviously the other radio friendly is the single "Pop That" but that song was out over a year ago. Even when he tries to be somewhat lyrical (yes I know that's not he wants) the production does not work in his favor. "Paranoid" is hard to pay attention to by both the beat and what French says. Surprisingly "F What Happens Tonight" works well on this album with everyone who is on the song. Even the songs that you want to work like "Gifted" featuring The Weeknd, and "We Go Wherever We Want" featuring Ne-Yo and Raekwon, just do not come together. I'm even more mad of the fact that my favorite from his crew, Chinx Drugz, only appears on one song "Throw It In The Bag" but he adds nothing to the song. The bonus songs are pretty stupid, cut and dry. "Marble Floors" sounds like Rick Ross rejected it for his own album and gave it to French. I won't even talk about how garbage "Ocho Cinco" is.

Overall, don't expect anything good from this album. If you were hoping that French was going to come as hard as he did on his mixtapes, then you will be disappointed. Bad lyrics and soft beats is pretty much the majority of this album. His group, Coke Boyz, could have used some exposure on here (I think Chinx Drugz can rhyme circles around French), but even with these soft sounding beats, they would have been wasted. I recommend downloading the few good tracks on this album. Hopefully French will put more effort into making a good album next time around. Peace.

Off topic: Anyone else finds it irrelevent that D-Roc and Kaine of the Ying Yang Twins are arguing with French over the "Hahn!" adlib? French says it differently then they do, not to mention that its just stupid to cry over.
