Although I have extensive experience with JavaScript, I have not been coding web applications for the last few years. I selected this book as a way to get back into coding one-page web applications. I found that the book as perfectly adapted for my needs, it provides an deep understanding of the framework without resorting to becoming an API catalog and without resorting to endless pages of repetitive example code.

The book has about 350 pages with a focus on providing an understanding of how the framework is meant to be used. That means that you can read the entire book quickly, even if you are busy. The examples are short and clearly illustrate the concepts in question. The book has three parts, an introductory part to get you started (installation etc.), a large middle part that describes how to use the various components in the framework and a final part that deals with a more holistic view of building web applications. Thus we have a lot of information packed into relatively few pages. For me, the perfect way to get up and running fast with a new technology.

I also appreciated the authors informal style of writing (making the book easier to read). The examples are often based on well understood problems (e.g. Departments/Employees etc.) Using well understood problems makes learning easier. From my point of view as desktop application developer, this book makes perfect sense and it more than fills the role of providing me an easy way to return to coding web applications.

This book is for software developers who want to implement one-page (AJAX) style web applications. The Ext.Js framework is perfectly suited for developing web-based CRUD application and other complex data-driven applications that mimic functionality that you might expect in a desktop application.

Only way to learn ExtJS... At least for me 16 décembre 2010
Par Deal Stealer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I initially thought that Sencha would provide developer manual if I paid a license... NOPE! All I got is sample codes and ExtJS Source. By looking at the example code, I thought "Wow~ great UI widgets! Code seems pretty easy too". But, I was not able to understand what ExtJS core library is... Even from the Sencha forum, they suggested that the best way to learn is read the example code... it felt a bit like homeless person kicked out during cold winter. In any case, this book really went in depth of what is ExtJS and how I should program. The "only" negative that I can think of is that ExtJS 4 is just around the corner to be released.. I believe that's sometime in Feb, 2011. Of course, this is the not the fault of the author! Probably just bad timing. Still, I'm pretty sure Jay will come up w/ new version to cover the ExtJS 4 ^_^. Definitely, going to buy it again~

Great documentation! 10 décembre 2010

My Review of Ext JS 3:
This book really fills in the gaps for me in learning Ext JS. I am really impressed with the approach, the examples, and the readability. I've watched J Garcia's videos and vimeo.com, so I was expecting a good book, but I am really pleased with it's completeness. If you are new to Ext JS, or even if you have been using it for a while, this book is a must!

My Review of Ext JS 4:
I learned Ext JS 3 somewhat by trial and error as the documentation at that time was not nearly as complete as one might want it to be. Ext JS 3 (and now Ext JS 4) is a framework built on a well thought out model designed by experienced web application developers. It is just that without proper documentation, it is difficult to reveal the model. I think that this book does an excellent job of revealing the underlying models behind everything from layout to datastores. Even if you don't plan on using Ext JS 4, you can gain a good understanding of what is necessary in a browser based, event driven framework by reading this book.

The book presents concepts followed by code and an annotated visual representation of what the code produces in the browser. I find this approach very informative because this is the way I would go about learning a concept. That is, I would write some code and see what it produced. I'm not a big fan of the "recipe" coding book, but I think this approach could be useful to those who like recipes as well as those who like concepts.

I am glad that the author didn't devote a lot of space to explaining concepts marginally related to Ext JS within the main text. I might have preferred some appendices with explanations of related topics as opposed to links on the web (as they evaporate).

I'm not currently coding in Ext JS, but I'm going to refer it to some developers I know who are using it.

Book was terrible 21 mai 2014

Certainly not a good way to learn Ext JS. It dives into the subject, jumps around, and doesn't delivery any sort of specifics a developer needs to get up and running with Ext JS. No references, and it's missing most - if not all - the major areas it needs for a web developer to understand the Ext JS framework and components. I missed the return date to return this book, which is a big disappointment for me.

Best Book for ExtJS 8 janvier 2011
Par John A. Thompson - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
There are several other ExtJS books out, which I own and have read. This book is by far the best of the options. I met Jay at Senchacon this year and sat through his presentation. Jay has been involved in the ExtJS community for a long time and has been teaching others ExtJS for a long time. In the book he does a great job of presenting ExtJS to the reader. Through his involvement in the ExtJS community, its clear Jay understands common pitfalls that people encounter when learning ExtJS. Jay does a great job of explaining concepts behind ExtJS.

If you can by only one book on ExtJS - start here. I lead a small development team & bought copies for each person.

Poorly Written / Examples are not clear 20 avril 2014
Par Bill M - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I recently purchased this book along with Practical JS 4. My Practical JS 4 is a better written and better thought out book. But the problem with Practical JS 4 is it doesn't cover enough, which is why I also bought Ext JS in Action (2014 version). But after trying to read Ext JS in Action, I've discovered the book leaves a lot to be desired. The writing often does not align with the diagrammed examples, and explanations as to what is going on are scant (not something that you can copy, but an explanation of what the code is doing so you can at some point create your own). The tone of the book often comes across as, "I've got something better to do with my time and it is not authoring this book."

This book which was just released is now several versions out of date, given that I think it was supposed to have been released over 2 years ago. Guess there were problems. The product shows it.
