Présentation de l'éditeur

One of the common characteristics of almost any successful teacher is passion- a love for the activity or skill being taught. Think back to the teachers that had the most profound impact on your own life and I would bet the impact they had on you stemmed from an intense passion for their subject matter. Boring teachers or coaches only serve to kill the drive that students may have initially. I pity the children that have to suffer under the tutelage of coaches who are simply teaching for money or because they are made to do so by a school or similar institution.

Passion is infectious. Many skills are “caught” not taught. A coach that eats, sleeps and breathes the activity they teach will most likely be surrounded by students who are excited by the activity; who want to be at every practice and game; and in the process are finding their abilities improving rapidly.

Children naturally gravitate to activities that are fun and promise enjoyment. A coach should make every effort to meet the expectation that children have i.e. that of having an enjoyable time. Children that are having fun, also learn quicker and the learning pathways to the brain are stimulated more readily when enjoyment is a factor in the learning process.

Coaching principles at there very finest.

This is a truly a comprehensive playbook that I thoroughly enjoyed. “Fair Play: An In Depth Guide to Coaching Children in Youth Sports (Youth Coaching For Novice Series Book 2)” by Author Greg Mumm is an astounding book that teaches the importance of being a coach to kids and for the kids. The passion, the love of the game and the true essence of what it is to teach the young is gripping and thought provoking on a whole other level. I could not help but have a certain nostalgic feeling of some of the coaches that had an amazing impact on my life when I was growing up. This book as certainly left an impression on me as I consider becoming a little league coach. 5 Stars and can’t wait to read book three in the series.

I think a great coach gives a perfect example in a balanced education for children. I also believe that team sports can have a significant positive impact on a child's personality. This book talks about all of that in a documented manner, providing explanations that stand behind the positive impact of sports and team related interactions, and on top, it does talk about coaching and what actions and attitude are to be expected from a great coach. It can play as a great set of advice for parents who would like to actively get involved in coaching their children sports teams, but also as a very good to know information for any parent.

I was a good soccer player as a child but couldn't make it big because of many reasons, one of which was the poor quality of coaches who I worked with. The recent soccer World Cup in Brazil has made me want to reconnect with the sport and so I've decided to take up coaching kids at soccer on weekends.

The entire series, “Youth Coaching for Novice” by Greg Mumm is a great way to get started on coaching. In this book, Greg focuses on coaching very young children, between the age of 6 to 12.

Coaching kids so young is different from coaching teenagers and requires a coach to have at least some knowledge of child psychology. A youth coach should have a high EQ or emotional quotient, which Greg discusses at length.

The coach should be enthusiastic, cheerful and communicate well with the children. I found the chapters on motivating kids and making them feel a part of the team very useful. Also relevant was the information on getting formal training as a coach.

Bottom line: Any young (or old) person interested in coaching children in any sport, should read this book first.

This is the second book in this series on youth coaching, and I like it as much as I liked the first book. It's really more of a collection of sound coaching principles, combined with real techniques that are specific to working with kids.

That's the part I appreciate the most, as in didn't think about a lot of the particulars that would go with coaching children. I can't wait to read the next book.
