An Outstanding Collection of Excellent Tales 9 mai 2010
Par Darien Summers - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is an outstanding collection of some of the Charles Perrault's best tales; namely, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Blue Beard. His stories are definitely not told in a manner consistent with American storytelling, but I don't necessarily think that is bad, especially if you want your child to expand their horizons.

One of the stories, for example, Blue Beard, is about a rich bachelor that seemingly has everything that a well off man of his settings would need, except for one thing: the fact that he has a blue beard. This fact doesn't earn him favor with the ladies and he has trouble finding a wife. What is ever the more strange is that it's rumored that Blue Beard has apparently had many wives in the past, but none of them are accounted for now. Well, Blue Beard finally manages to marry a girl in this tale, and when she finds out what happened to those other wives she ends up terribly frightened for her own fate. Nothing bad becomes of her though.

An interesting tale, like I said, one to get if you're looking for something different. The other stories are well worth the read too. I hope you give the book a try.

Purchase for the Walter Crane Illustrations 20 novembre 2012
Par Marco Antonio Abarca - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Walter Crane was one of the best illustrators from the Golden Age of Children's Literature. Original copies of the books he illustrated are highly collectible. Consequently, they are difficult to find and expensive. "Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault" is a reprint of 1901 translation of Charles Perrault's fairy tales translated by Charles Welsh. This is an inexpensive book and consequently the printing is done on lower quality paper. I doubt that this reprint will ever be collectible. The best thing about this book are the Walter Crane illustrations. As for Charles Welsh's translation, it is over a hundred years old and the language is difficult for a young child to understand. There are countless contemporary re-workings of Perrault's fairy tales that are easier to undersand. If you keep in mind this is an inexpensive reprint, you should be happy with this purchase.

not for children 9 février 2012

I returned this book. It is a collectors' item, I guess: written in an archaic language that is not easy to understand. Definitely not for kids.
