Présentation de l'éditeur

101 False Friends in English and Spanish

All English speaking students of Spanish can’t help but notice the huge amount of shared vocabulary between the two languages. In linguistics, we call these words ‘cognates’.
Spanish and English have thousands of cognates, e.g. accident/accidente, matrimony/matrimonio etc.

However, not all words that look alike share the same meaning. We call such words ‘false friends’ and they can be a real pain, not to mention potentially embarrassing! This eBook is a list of the top 101 Spanish/English false friends.

The eBook includes:

● 101 alphabetical examples of false friends in English and Spanish.

● Example sentences in Spanish and notes which explain key grammar points.

● 40 multiple choice questions, to test what you have learned.

● A brief section on the grammar of Spanish, e.g. verbs, nouns, adjectives etc.

● 63 links to free websites for learning Spanish.

If you want to avoid mistakes such as ‘Estoy embarazada’ (meaning ‘I’m pregnant’ when you want to say ‘I’m embarrassed’), then this is the eBook for you. Scroll back up and download it now!

Steve Aiston has provided a guide out of oblivion when learning to trust your understanding of language - in this specific boo, that language is Spanish. His writing is very user friendly, at times hilarious in the asides he offers about errors we can make in the `falsos amigos' or false friends in thinking a word is Spanish is something it is not.

Aiston sets the rules up front - we will be dealing with verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections (remember the days of grade school and high school English classes?), and gratefully places the parts of speech in brackets - example, un perro (noun, masculine) - and after explaining each of these categories to remind us of their position in language he is off and running with his words that may appear in Spanish to have English equivalents, but don not.

Each word (and they are in alphabetical order) is in bold, followed by the designator described above, and then the real meaning of a word in Spanish that we may think we know but don't. Some examples: Abogado (noun, masculine) is a lawyer NOT an avocado; Alterado means angry or annoyed not a change; Blindar is not blind but means to armor or safe guard; Collar in Spanish means a necklace; Complexion does not refer to skin, but to body type or body build. This goes on throughout the alphabet to introduce 101 `false friends'.

Aiston shares sentences that may give us trouble, some information on Spanish grammar (very helpful), and offers addresses of free websites to learn Spanish - correctly. This is a very well conceived book that after reading will erase some of the embarrassment of misinterpreting words heard or read and prevent some errors in transitioning between English and Spanish. Idiosyncrasies yes, but most of all this is a guide to avoid sounding ridiculous when misusing the Spanish language! Grady Harp, February 14

An A - Z book, great for avoiding the pitfalls that so many of us encounter when learning a new language. Good explanations, easy to use, and very informative. A must for every English person learning to speak Spanish.

Clearly written with excellent examples. Wish I'd had this book a long time ago. It would have saved me a lot of awkward moments (and a few humiliating ones). Tho my husband is Spanish I have never been truly fluent. I found quite a few words in here I have been misusing in context. I am definitely going to search for other books by this author.
