Description de l'ouvrage

22 septembre 2009
Mapping out a “family constellation,” explains Dr. Joy Manné, encompasses exploring previous powerful life events from accidents to adoptions and accessing the deepest dynamics in that family system. This process helps us recognize and then resolve deeply seated family patterns. For example, in order to understand a person’s inability to trust, the family history of betrayal must be uncovered and released. These insights replace resentment with respect, pain with understanding.Dr. Manné uses the knowledge gained from her own practice as well as her educational experiences with Bert Hellinger, the founder of Family Constellations therapy, to clearly describe this technique. Most family constellation sessions are carried out in a group setting, with the facilitator first seeking clarity regarding the issue or problem the client has come to work out. Representatives are then chosen from among the group and the constellation is set up and worked in until it comes to resolution. This may be followed by a closing ritual and advice about how to integrate what the constellation has revealed. Through the use of real-life examples of family constellations, Dr. Manné makes this increasingly popular practice understandable and relatable.

Revue de presse

"This is a special book.... And it is such easy and beautiful reading. Beyond this, it is soul warming with many surprising hints on how to make our lives and our relationships richer and more fulfilling."
—From the foreword by Bert Hellinger, principal developer of Family Constellations therapy and author of more than thirty books

"You have only to read the table of contents in Family Constellations to know that this is a book that addresses everything you want to know about Bert Hellinger’s system and how it is being used. Joy Manné presents a clear and simple description of this effective method of reconciling with others, with the past, and with ourselves."
—Kylea Taylor, author of The Ethics of Caring: Honoring the Web of Life in Our Professional Healing Relationships

"Family Constellations is the book that I and many others have been waiting for. This introduction to Family Constellations is written in clear language that breathes on the page. Like a good chef making sauce, Dr. Manné has reduced the manifold ingredients of this branch of therapy to the essence of both the practice and its spiritual nature. Aptly illustrated with case histories, the central message uplifts and inspires: when we open our hearts and agree to what is so, rather than what we believe to be so, we meet Love–the one and only healer."
—Philippa Lubbock, Life Alignment therapist, Constellator (Family Constellations), Healing Through the Family Soul

"Joy Manné has done a wonderful job distilling Bert Hellinger’s Family Constellations method. If you are interested in this work, you don’t need to buy a shelf-full of expensive books that you will never have time to read. Dr. Manné has done the work for you and written it all down with a clarity and directness that is all too rare in books about therapeutic approaches."
—Ken Sloan, co-developer of Nature Constellations Work

"Joy Manné has written a succinct, didactic book about Family Constellations that focuses on the essence of the approach. She has a gift for unveiling the method, its usefulness, and the different parts so that readers understand the overall picture before delving into the details. This book is a jewel among books on Family Constellations. Dr. Manné’s wisdom, respect, and love come shining through making this mini-textbook a testimony to the devotion and discipline of Family Constellation facilitators."
—Kate Lindley Scheidegger, The Talent Spirit, Geneva, Switzerland

“This slender guide gives a succinct outline of family constellations work… a useful guide for those new to the method.”
New Consciousness Review

“[Family Constellations] certainly is very detailed and easy to understand, even to those whose background is not in psychotherapy… [The book] provides a unique view on the causes and solutions to many of life’s problems.”
Luxury Reading

This slender guide gives a succinct outline of family constellations work -- the method for family conflict re-solution developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger. Typically carried out in groups, with one person having their family issue "constellated" by the other participants (who are called representatives), family constellations are inherently experiential. So, while it is useful to have a book outlining how the constellation is set up and carried out, it's one of those experiences where you really have to be there to get it.

You have to be there partly because the work unfolds in an unknown energetic field that seems to be outside of time and space, which sounds pretty flaky until you stop to consider that we are continually being bombarded by energy that we don't know about and can't see. Every family is a field of energy in which the members are held, each in our own unique position. Genes, beliefs, values, and behavior patterns are passed on through the generations, and our particular family field either enhances or limits our capacities for happiness, harmonious relationships, success and achieving goals, health, freedom of choice, and well being.

Family constellation work seems especially useful for personal concerns that seem long-standing and immovable, despite therapeutic or spiritual tools that may have been used previously to loosen their hold. Author Joy Manne presents case histories that help illuminate the ways that family constellation work offers clients and participants an opportunity to learn about life and relationships at a deep and profound level. Greater self-respect and wholeness are often what participants experience after having their constellation done, as well as healing within the family system; the benefits seems to ripple throughout the family system over time and in ways that are both subtle and obvious.

Family Constellations is a useful guide for those new to the method. Bert Hellinger, the founder of this therapeutic method gives a glowing endorsement saying that this is the best introduction to his work he's read. It doesn't get much better than that.

I have personally attended, participated, and trained in family constellation work and I can attest that it is an extraordinarily powerful, moving, and fulfilling method for re-solution of personal issues, family systems and ancestral appreciation.

I have attended two constellations and had a lot of questions that this book in a didactical, fluent, full of real cases has resolved. After reading this book I do have a better understanding of how and whom this Therapy can help, but also what I should work out further, in and outside this Therapy, to heal my own family constellation and thus our destiny.

Family Constellations: A Practical Guide to Uncovering the Origins of Family Conflict by Joy Manne PH.D.
A book review by Ginger Dawn Harman

Joy Manne's Family Constellations is an influential guide and empowering explanation to the Bert Hellinger's Family Constellations method. As I first began this book, I must admit that I have never heard or read of this therapeutic tool. I found the process of Bert Hellinger's Family Constellations method most baffling and yet I felt a strong pull toward the energy of this book. Joy Manne provides a clear and articulate understanding of the Family Constellation process. Her knowledge and experience is provided to the reader with examples of case studies and appropriate actions on behalf of the client, facilitator, and representatives.

Joy Manne uses a respectful, nonjudgmental tone with her writing. As I started reading, I experienced a welcoming invitation that had been presented to me as a reader. One must have an open mind before reading this book if you have never heard of this process. Understanding how the "altruistic and generous acts of our parents and ancestors bring benefit, while their harmful acts damage the energy field" can be overwhelming. I found myself having my own personal family history surface several times while reading this book. Moreover, I sensed a warmth and understanding of the complexities of the family unit as a whole. Joy Manne is very affirmative with the process of the slow and carefully chosen truth statements that one can achieve from the family constellation technique.

I also highly respect the author for some of the distractions and negativity that can appear during a session. For example, in some groups, all participants pay the same fee and this may bring forth a competitive nature as one wishes to be "client." Culturally, this might become an issue among many Americans. The topics of incest, hatred, forgiveness, and homosexuality could be misinterpreted. Joy Manne's explanation is sensitive and thoughtful with each of these clarifications. Furthermore, I admire how the author expresses that the highest of ethics must be placed among those who facilitate a constellation to be aware of those who may not be stable. This can be solved with the client's therapist or psychiatrist.

This process I found could be easily misinterpreted. Yet, Joy Manne is able to address each of these issues with clarity and on each of the three levels of consciousness. This method is one of respect, understanding, honor, and gratitude. My only disappointment was that the book was short. I wanted more and was ready to observe the next step of Family Constellation. I would like to continue with this process and go to a workshop as an observer or representative. I also feel that this guide would be very useful to read accompanied with Bert Hellinger's book, "Love's Hidden Symmetry: What Makes Love Work in Relationships." I highly recommend Family Constellations: A Practical Guide to Uncovering the Origins of Family Conflict by Joy Manne PH.D.
