What. A wonderful. Book

Really. A rollicking, idiosyncratic, mad, sun-filled romp in pre-War Corfu with a somewhat insane yet very proper English family. Four siblings (including the narrator), each with his or her own entrenched quirks, and their mother decide to leave England on a whim - the weather is dreadful - and move to Greece. Once there, their ongoing cohabitation coupled with new and mysterious culture, language, flora and fauna will give rise to the most hilarious episodes, narrated in an absolutely deadpan manner by a mischievious Gerald. Common sense seems to be lacking entirely but is supplemented by an extravagant resourcefulness - as when they realize their house is too small to accomodate their summer guests, well they simply move houses. There is an innocence, beauty and delight in nature that the future naturalist already conveys wonderfully - and well, did I mention how funny this book is?
