Who knew??!! 17 avril 2009
Par L. Allen - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
To discover that Clarence White was playing a non-B-Bender-equipped Telecaster like he does on these recordings from early 1968(!) is nothing short of revelatory. For guitarists, especially those with an interest in countrified electric guitar, what a twenty-something White was doing is on the same level as what Jimi Hendrix did for rock guitar - it is that astounding. It is noteworthy that while there were some very good country pickers who must have inspired the young White on electric guitar (he was already established at the time as a very adept acoustic country flatpicker with the Kentucky Colonels), most notably Don Rich with Buck Owens and Roy Nichols with Merle Haggard, what Clarence White developed was an attempt to emulate the pedal steel guitar by bending multiple strings.
Okay, the singing by Gib Guilbeau is pretty pedestrian bar-band country, and the songs are mostly '60s country standard-fare, but Gene Parsons (like White, a future Byrds member) was a kick-butt drummer driving the band - and White - to better heights than they had a right to, given the material. The recordings are surprisingly clean, although the backing vocals are mostly lost, which is too bad as Guilbeau's thin voice takes undeserved prominence in the mix; thankfully, the lead guitar is very present. But if you are a guitar-picker or simply curious as to the beginnings of modern electric country guitar (think Pete Anderson, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, or Marty Stuart - who provides liner notes for this reissue), this recording is a must-have documentation of where it all came from.

It's Clarence, for God's sake. 19 décembre 2012

I ran across this first on YouTube, and it's

1. not so great if you insist on pristine recording quality: it sounds like a board tape at a small gig.

2. not so great for the singing; it's just adequate for a bar band, as has been noted elsewhere.

3. absolutely essential if you care about guitar. Clarence White was a brilliant and innovative Telecaster master, and fortunately the poorly-balanced mix of this recording favors his guitar. I'm so grateful that this is available.

This is a wonderful example of pre-Byrds Clarence White, recorded with Gene Parsons on drums and Gib Gibeau on vocals. As a fan of country-rock and/or CW, this is an invaluable performance. They play a lot of classic country tunes, and what would have been contemporary songs for the time as well. It's CW on his telecaster, and it's really an amazing thing to have this CD as a document of his playing at this point in his development! It's a live recording, so not without it's imperfections, but it's off-the-cuff and fun. The liner notes are full of anecdotes and remembrances. I come back to this recording regularly, and I strongly recommend it!

For Fans of Clarence 5 novembre 2014
Par Morten Vindberg - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
It was, of course, due to the contribution from Clarence White that made me buy this obscure live CD with the group Nashville West. In addition to the five original members Clarence White must be the most prominent personality who came into the Byrds during the many line-up changes of the band.

Both his brilliant guitar playing, which is very easily recognised, and his also very distinctive vocals were important ingredients in the group from 1968 until the its dissolution in 1973.

I seems obvious that these live recordings were hardly conceived as sanything worthy of commercial release; the sound is not very good, and had it not been for Clarence White, they probably would never have been released.

In spite of the below sonics, it is possible rejoice White’s fine and always inventive playing. Unfortunately, we do not hear much to his vocals, which for me was something of a disappointment. The lead-singer Gib Guilbeau is at best ordinary and even though the rhythm section sounds experienced, it is never really exciting.

This is obviously a release that appeals mostly to fans of Clarence White. Best tracks are "Sweet Susannah," "Ode to Billy Joe," "Sing Me Back Home", "Louisiana Rain" and of course White's own "Nashville West"

It sounds like a bootleg... 6 décembre 2011

I love Clarence White and was excited to find this CD as I'd heard good things about it. I'm glad I own it, but wish it was better produced with more cohesion and stronger vocals. The mix is pretty bad overall. Still, this is Clarence White making the switch from acoustic flat-picking to all out electric ripping. I own the original version of this CD and don't know if the 2009 release is cleaned up at all, but I do know it has some extra tunes. Spend the extra dollar to get the newer one.
