5.0 étoiles sur 5 FILM IN FIVE SECONDS Book Review by HeGeekSheGeek.com 3 octobre 2014
Par Ray Smotherman - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
She Geek and I love movies. I mean a lot. We’ve got hundreds of DVDs, Blu-Rays, and downloads, half of which we probably haven’t even looked at. And that’s where the trouble lies. Who has the time to actually watch the thousands of hours of cinema that they really want–no, need to view? That’s where Film in Five Seconds: Over 150 Great Movie Moments – In Moments! comes in handy. Design studio H-57 took some of the most popular must see films of all time and broke them down into simple infographics spanning just one or two pages each. The entire nine-plus hours of the Lord of the Rings trilogy are summed up in just three images: a ring, a very long arrow, and Mount Doom. There, done!

Film in Five Seconds is laid out not only as a book of infographics but as a knowledge tester for film buffs. The images are not labeled, allowing the reader to try to figure out the movie from the limited amount of visuals given. Some of the pages are pretty simple, given that a silhouette of an AT-AT Walker can really only mean one thing. Some are quite a bit trickier like the flowchart of the rainbow of men with multiple arrows going to and from each. Luckily, the answers are in the back of the book, and you’ll be smacking your forehead when you realize the answer was right there in the picture the whole time.

As an additional feature, you can download a QR reader called Quercus Eye and use your smartphone to watch some of the pages come to life. However, I found that, as is the case with so many augmented reality experiences, I was spending too much time waiting for the animation to buffer and being underwhelmed by the results. Still, you’re saving hours by not watching the whole film so you’ve got some free time to kill, I guess.

Film in Five Seconds combines our love of movies with our love of infographics so it’s easy for us to recommend this book. Whether you have seen every movie under the sun and are looking for a new way to experience them, or you don’t care about film but you’re tired of getting left out of your friends’ geeky movie conversations, Film in Five Seconds is a great way to spend an hour or so catching up with the classics.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Most fun when read with a crowd, quiz-style 22 juillet 2014

OMG fun!! If this book were a Facebook quiz it would go viral for sure. If it's not clear from the description, the whole book is like a game. Each page is a minimalist infographic poster that depicts a (mostly) famous movie. The fun is in figuring out the answers without looking.

My partner and I spent the better part of an evening arguing over our (mostly wrong) guesses. Actually, we did get quite a few of them, but it was the ones we got wrong that made us groan the most, because as soon as we read the answers they made total sense. Ohhh, of course! Why didn't we get that? It was a lot of fun. I wish it was a Facebook quiz actually, just so I could compare my "scores" with my friends.

And in case you're wondering, yes that is the entire book. It's not a book about movies, with lots of details and facts. It's really just a book of these picture riddles with the answers at the back (the digital copy I received does allow you to easily click back and forth between the pictures and the answers, but otherwise they're just all listed at the end of the book). Having said that, I'm not mad about that at all because I loved these pictures and had a great time going through them, especially with another person (or 'player').

Oh, but there is one other thing in the book I almost forgot about. At the back of the book, the creators included a few pages of infographic template elements that you can cut out and mix and match to make your own picture puzzles. How fun is that? I don't think they'd work in my digital copy, though, unless I was able to somehow print that page or convert it to a file I could manipulate. No matter. It's a cool idea anyway.

This review was first posted on my blog, Cozy Little Book Journal, and is based on a digital review copy I received through NetGalley.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Cute, fun idea 20 septembre 2014

A funny, cute idea. My husband and I worked to get the clues and of course groaned when we got them wrong. Two issues made me give 4 instead of 5 stars. 1. VERY difficult to see many of the graphics on my Kindle. 2. The book description led me to believe there would be a text component to each film. A fun idea, more of a coffee table book than a book for digital readers.

This review a result of a digital review copy from the publisher and Eidelweiss.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 200 films in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. 23 mai 2014

The guys who brought us Life in Five Seconds have now released Film in Five Seconds. They have taken 200 films and boiled them down to a brief, simple graphic summary. Some of them are laugh out loud funny, some I didn't recognize, and some didn't make sense to me. Thankfully, there is an "answer key" for the ones you can't figure out.

This is a great, clever diversion. It's a quick read, obviously (16 minutes and 40 seconds, to be precise) but the "films" are fun to "watch" and fun to share. And, like real movies, many are worth "watching" again.

This is SO much fun. A book. A game. A brilliant gift. I read it with my friend on the subway and people were looking over our shoulders. The movies are amazing. The distillation of images is a treat. I highly recommend this to any film fan.
