Présentation de l'éditeur

"It’s just a little family history. What could go wrong?"

When Lizzie Clydell agreed to join her grandmother at the church’s genealogy group meeting she expected nothing more than lemon squares and a few stories. Instead, an old diary leads Lizzie down a dusty road of lies, hidden family secrets, and a lynching that nearly destroyed her family.

Still struggling with the loss of her parents two decades earlier, Lizzie must confront a painful past that others hoped was forgotten. Her journey becomes even more difficult as she realizes those around her may not be as they seem.

Can Lizzie make peace with the past or will it destroy the relationships she holds most dear?

Joining her is a group of lifelong friends known to Lizzie as The Gals. Headed up by her own grandmother, the group of women guide her through the past with humor, encouragement, and tough love as she learns about grace and forgiveness.

Set in small town Georgia, Finding Eliza is a contemporary story with flashes of historical fiction as Lizzie digs into the 1930s of segregation, illegal interracial relationships, and the fear of the KKK.

"The most intriguing style to me (was) that you could tell one story three ways and do it with such grace and elegance." D.M.

"I couldn't put it down!" Y.F.

I was into chapter four before I knew it! I hated having it stop reading each time I did. C.T.

I love a good historical mystery and Finding Eliza totally delivered. I simply could not put this book down! The reader floats between past and present - watching hate and prejudice terrorize and destroy innocent love, while discovering the consequences and outcomes of that evil from the viewpoint of our present day acceptance of people no matter the color of their skin. My heart was absolutely ruined for the hurt and pain of the past. The author did a fine job of portraying the confusion of the human heart. How often it seems that evildoers go without consequence? So we blame any convenient party. Stephanie Pitcher Fishman has written a beautiful tale of hope and mercy in the wake of historical hate and turmoil. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Fishman in the future.

Finally, a fabulous fictional story without grinding bodies and sweaty pecks every other page. If a story doesn't grab me in the first chapter, forget it. Finding Eliza did! And, the author made me cry. Thanks. But, worth every tear I shed. Who doesn't have family secrets? Especially in small towns. This heart grabbing, stomach dropping story about digging deep into the trenches of family history, sucked me in. I was determined to finish the story no matter what the clock said. The only question I was left with was, when will the next book be out?
No, seriously. When?
No pressure.
This new author is going to set the publishing world ablaze.
Bravo!

This is a new genre for me to read, I am happy that I came across this book. You follow Lizzie, her Gran and "the Gals" in a journey into history. Finding out your family history is less than stellar can be a shock. In her grandfather's diary Lizzie learns of her Great Aunt Eliza and a relationship she had with a boy who was not white. The past is not pretty but it is what you make of it that is the true test of what kind of person you are.
From the beginning chapters Stephanie Pitcher Fishman gives wonderful details about the South! If you have never seen the red clay dirt in the south, you will FEEL like you have reading her descriptions. I lived in the south when I was younger, it's been more than 20 years since I have been back, but with words alone, this author took me right back.
The subjects can be harsh, but Stephanie handles everything so well and makes you really care about these characters.
There were tears shed and laughter as well while I was reading. Lizzie and the Gals reminded me of so many people that I knew, and I think that was one reason that this story felt so real. The care shown in research cannot be understated by me either. I am a history buff and when an author adds real life history to a book, I love that what was included in Finding Eliza was true, and although harsh, it is part of history that shouldn't be forgotten.

For a new author in this wild world of independent writers, Stephanie has one heck of a future in writing! I will be first in line for more books from Stephanie.

I just finished reading this book, couldn't put it down. A great debut for a new author. Loved the Gals and Lizzie, hope to see them again soon! A little historical fiction to remind us of our past and a reminder that often we must forgive ourselves as well as others.

What happens when a young woman who grew up in the south decides to join her grandmother for genealogy research? No doubt, she'll discover some dark family secrets. This debut novel by Stephanie Pitcher Fishman deals with some tragic events that were all too common during a time when Jim Crow laws were enforced. You'll fall in love with "The Gals" and find yourself wanting to read more from this author. A great debut novel!
