Présentation de l'éditeur

"It’s just a little family history. What could go wrong?"

When Lizzie Clydell agreed to join her grandmother at the church’s genealogy group meeting she expected nothing more than lemon squares and a few stories. Instead, an old diary leads Lizzie down a dusty road of lies, hidden family secrets, and a lynching that nearly destroyed her family.

Still struggling with the loss of her parents two decades earlier, Lizzie must confront a painful past that others hoped was forgotten. Her journey becomes even more difficult as she realizes those around her may not be as they seem.

Can Lizzie make peace with the past or will it destroy the relationships she holds most dear?

Joining her is a group of lifelong friends known to Lizzie as The Gals. Headed up by her own grandmother, the group of women guide her through the past with humor, encouragement, and tough love as she learns about grace and forgiveness.

Set in small town Georgia, Finding Eliza is a contemporary story with flashes of historical fiction as Lizzie digs into the 1930s of segregation, illegal interracial relationships, and the fear of the KKK.

"The most intriguing style to me (was) that you could tell one story three ways and do it with such grace and elegance." D.M.

"I couldn't put it down!" Y.F.

I was into chapter four before I knew it! I hated having it stop reading each time I did. C.T.

Finally, a fabulous fictional story without grinding bodies and sweaty pecks every other page. If a story doesn't grab me in the first chapter, forget it. Finding Eliza did! And, the author made me cry. Thanks. But, worth every tear I shed. Who doesn't have family secrets? Especially in small towns. This heart grabbing, stomach dropping story about digging deep into the trenches of family history, sucked me in. I was determined to finish the story no matter what the clock said. The only question I was left with was, when will the next book be out?
No, seriously. When?
No pressure.
This new author is going to set the publishing world ablaze.
Bravo!

I love a good historical mystery and Finding Eliza totally delivered. I simply could not put this book down! The reader floats between past and present - watching hate and prejudice terrorize and destroy innocent love, while discovering the consequences and outcomes of that evil from the viewpoint of our present day acceptance of people no matter the color of their skin. My heart was absolutely ruined for the hurt and pain of the past. The author did a fine job of portraying the confusion of the human heart. How often it seems that evildoers go without consequence? So we blame any convenient party. Stephanie Pitcher Fishman has written a beautiful tale of hope and mercy in the wake of historical hate and turmoil. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Fishman in the future.

This is a new genre for me to read, I am happy that I came across this book. You follow Lizzie, her Gran and "the Gals" in a journey into history. Finding out your family history is less than stellar can be a shock. In her grandfather's diary Lizzie learns of her Great Aunt Eliza and a relationship she had with a boy who was not white. The past is not pretty but it is what you make of it that is the true test of what kind of person you are.
From the beginning chapters Stephanie Pitcher Fishman gives wonderful details about the South! If you have never seen the red clay dirt in the south, you will FEEL like you have reading her descriptions. I lived in the south when I was younger, it's been more than 20 years since I have been back, but with words alone, this author took me right back.
The subjects can be harsh, but Stephanie handles everything so well and makes you really care about these characters.
There were tears shed and laughter as well while I was reading. Lizzie and the Gals reminded me of so many people that I knew, and I think that was one reason that this story felt so real. The care shown in research cannot be understated by me either. I am a history buff and when an author adds real life history to a book, I love that what was included in Finding Eliza was true, and although harsh, it is part of history that shouldn't be forgotten.

For a new author in this wild world of independent writers, Stephanie has one heck of a future in writing! I will be first in line for more books from Stephanie.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 "The past is something we work through, not something we look for on purpose." Lizzie Clydell 14 juin 2014
Par Pamela Black - Publié sur Amazon.com

No matter how hard we try, we can never keep the past in the past. It reaches out to us when we least expect it, and in ways we can't conceive until they are fully realized. And that is Lizzie Clydells experience in Finding Eliza, a warm, witty story that spans generations and hearts.

Stephanie nailed this story from beginning to end. Her writing sings and the story flows drawing you in and keeping you spellbound. I read straight through in less than 3 days because I simply couldn't put. it. down. I was lost in Lizzies world of a young girl pushing back a deep hurt from years past, and her Grandmother and friends who loved her enough to help her face that hurt. Through the anguish experienced by her ancestors, who suffered through the deep darkness of a post civil war era, Lizzie comes to understand her own loss, and ultimately, to embrace it.

You can't read this story and not be touched by what I can only call a story reality. Although fiction, FE brings the reader backwards in time to a place we often want to ignore or excuse. A place in our countries history that many wish didn't exist. But this is also a story of hope. Hope that we can learn to love and face darkness, in light of our own loss, and see it in a new light. A place of healing.

Simply put, I loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone I know with out reservation. It is a love story with out being smarmy. It has depth with out being instructional. It paints a picture of darkness yet gives a light, a hope, that we can heal, we can be better. As a huge fan of Toni Morrisons work, I will tell you that the issues addressed in Finding Eliza are of great importance to all society. This is an important story, and should be included as part of a larger body of work addressing the injustices of the post civil war era.

My hope is that the success of this type of storytelling--one that addresses such strong issues in such a hopeful, encouraging manner--will open the doorway for more stories of it's kind to be heard. I cant wait to read more from this author!!!!

Finding Eliza is one of the best stories I've read in a long, long time. In short, READ IT! SHARE IT! You won't be sorry!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Southern Charm and Gripping Story 14 juin 2014

Not since Steel Magnolias has a group of southern belles been as strong, charming, and funny. Throw in a compelling mystery and poignant history, and you've got a can't-put-down, can't-miss hit.

The author has done a brilliant job of combining an accurate portrayal of the pre-equal-rights south with a contemporary southern (yet still genteel) setting, where the consequences of that history might actually matter. Readers weave in and out of the two timeframes seamlessly as the tapestry unfolds into a poignant tale of family relationships, societal mores, and one woman's quest for truth. Not only is the plot intriguing and the setting inviting, the cast of characters is so charismatic, you'll want to join them on the veranda for sweet tea and lemon bars. This is a must read. A great debut novel.
