Présentation de l'éditeur

Did you know that North Carolina was actually the first gold-producing state?

Yes! The nation's gold rush did not start in California as most people believe, it started in North Carolina. With the discovery of a 17- pound gold nugget in 1799 by a young boy named Conrad Reed in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, America's first gold rush was on. For the next 50 years, North Carolina would be the nation's top gold producer. At the peak of North Carolina’s gold rush, there were more than 600 gold mines operating in the state, with the estimated value of gold recovered reaching more than $1 million a year.

Is there still gold in the Carolina hills? Hmm.... I will say this, there are a number of places in North Carolina that are open to the public for not only gold mining, but also gem mining. For example, Reed Gold Mine, now a state historic site, is open to the public and visitors can try their hand at gold panning for a nominal fee. Speaking of gems....

Where can some of the richest deposits of gems and minerals in the world can be found? North Carolina? You guessed it! Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and other precious gemstones can be found in the state’s rich soil. Rockhounds and gem collectors from around the world are lured to North Carolina in search of nature’s rich treasures. And do they find them? Of course they do! In this little guide, I talk a bit about gems and gold, but most importantly I present a list of locations that offer gold and gem mining to the public to get you started on your own treasure hunt in North Carolina. I hope you find this information useful. If you do, don't forget to write a review.
