Présentation de l'éditeur

“Before you embark on a journey of vengeance, dig two graves.” - Confucius.

With the dark cloud of civil war gathering on the horizon, Gabriel Garrett struggles to protect his new home and the new life he has just begun. But as he soon learns, a man’s past has a way of catching up with him, and Gabriel has more than his share of dark secrets.

When his world is shattered, he will walk a path of vengeance across a land where the dead hold sway, and the living count their lives in seconds. His enemy is the deadliest he has ever faced, and in this battle, there is no justice, no redemption, and no mercy.

There is only revenge.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of The Best Books For 2014 So Far 11 mars 2014

Gabe is back, and scarier than ever. After Eric's emotional roller coaster of a story last time, I was wondering what James Cook had left in the tank. The answer is a tale that ups the ante both in action and scope as we see the focus shift to Gabe as he is drawn back into the world he thought he left behind. The quiet times we see with Gabe, Liz, Allison and Eric don't drag at all and are a perfect setup for what is to come as Gabe and Eric's salvage company becomes a thriving business in Hollow Rock. I love those little snippets of normalcy, and the scene with Gabe trying to slip in to visit Eric without being caught by Allison (I can't reveal more without spoilers) is hysterically funny.

One of the things I love about this series is that action spawns reaction, and their world is a fluid one. For example, Gabe makes a bargain that will have repercussions down the road, and the mysteries that shroud Gabe begin to unravel to his friends. I word to the reader, I won't try to start this series with this book. The author does a nice job of reminding us what happened in the last book as the story progresses, but this is not the point you want to jump into the series. Read and enjoy the others before getting into "Fire In Winter". You will be glad you did.

I really enjoyed every book in the series so far, but this one left me a little disappointed. I am not reading this series for flashbacks of an old operation. Flashbacks are great for character development, but this was a substantial part of the book that did nothing to really further the development of the main character. Felt like cheap filler.

The strengths of the series so far was the multiple points of view. This one read like a serial military book.

The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that I read it to darn fast! Once I started it I was unable to put it down. Mr. Cooks delivers another amazing tale in the Surviving the Dead series. It's action packed with loved characters returning and some getting more fleshed out. There are more zombies in this book hurray! But also it's about the USA trying to put itself back together after everything that had happened so far in the story. People are being attacked on different fronts not just the walking dead. It's amazing the amount of detail Mr. Cook puts into his books and he never disappoints. Fans will love the next installment then curse softly when they are done because the story is not over!! Anyone new to the series I would suggest to go start with No Easy Hope and work your way up to Fire In Winter. It's an amazing story. What I really liked was it was all from Gabe's point of view Eric is still around but he had his debut in the last one so this one was great and we got to see more of one of my favorite characters Hicks! All in all i recommend this book tremendously to fan and new comers. It was an awesome adventure and now I have to wait for the next one!!!.

Mr. Cook again delivers in his fourth installment of his "Surviving the Dead" series. This should be no surprise, as his writing stands out when compared to many other writers in this genre; he definitely knows his audience and gives them what they want.

The story is told from Gabe Garrett’s perspective – one of the two central characters in the Surviving the Dead universe. A reader of the prior installments will be right at home with Gabe’s familiar voice narrating the unfolding events. The action is well paced, the main characters are well developed, and the political factions emerging from the ashes of a destroyed nation are certainly plausible. If you are a fan of this series, you will enjoy Fire in Winter.

There are a few shortcomings that some readers may find distracting, however. First, the villains are so inherently evil and sociopathic that one wonders if there is some level of veiled satire going on. The main villain of the story also has a few descriptive clichés that stand out. The villains in the prior installment (The Warrior Within) were also cut from the same cloth. While such villains are easy to hate, as a reader I feel the author misses an opportunity to enrich the story. The villains that emerge in such an apocalypse were “one of us” before the outbreak, and an inability to identify with them pushes this reader away instead of pulling him in. Some ambiguity in their motives or morality would make for a very intriguing read.

Second, some of the love scenes are difficult to read because the dialog seems either stilted or out of character. Many authors appear to have difficulty with this subject matter.

Finally, there is some fatigue setting in. As a reader I enjoy multi-installment stories, but I also need some closure after time. I see a couple of more novels in this series before I begin to lose interest (that is not so much a critique of Mr. Cook than it is of the reader).
