Présentation de l'éditeur

Selecting perennial plants can be overwhelming – there are hundreds of choices, and it’s difficult to know when your plants will bloom, whether they’ll thrive in sunny or shady spots, and which ones will look well together. In Five-Plant Gardens, Nancy Ondra eliminates the guesswork and the stress, offering 52 garden plans that each use only five plants! These plans are simple, inexpensive, and sure to look beautiful all season long. They are grouped according to whether they grow best in sun, partial shade, or full shade, and each one includes an illustrated planting plan, a shopping list with brief plant descriptions, information on what to expect as the planting matures, and tips on customizing the plan for different sites and climates.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Fantastic book for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike 11 avril 2014
Par Steve Proctor - Publié sur Amazon.com
Having read one of Nancy Ondra's previous books and love it, I was excited by this latest book, which covers my favorite type of plants - perennials. With "Five-Plant Gardens" Ondra has created a bible for anyone looking to work with perennial plants. You don't need the perfect light, soil, or moisture conditions because the 52 'recipes' the book guides you through getting the best results from any garden.

Having read a couple other books on the subject, I was worried that Ondra's book would simply be a repeat of them. I couldn't have been more wrong. The content is excitingly unique and simple yet informative. Boiling down your focus to just five-plant gardens makes this growing season that much more exciting. In the words of the author, this "simple to follow planting plan can make the different between inspiring success and frustrating disappointment." I spent much of my winter reading gardening books so this season is better than the last. The other book that helped boost my confidence is Ruth Stout's classic - Gardening Without Work: For the Aging, the Busy, and the Indolent (Horticulture Garden Classic).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Buying the Kindle version, it will be the best $3 ever spent! 24 mai 2014

This book IMMEDIATELY went into my Amazon cart after I finished it. I can't believe they only want $3 for the kindle edition (although I am getting the print version).

This book provided 52 garden plans for a plant garden using 5 different plants for each garden. These weren't your run of the mill plants. Some might be difficult to acquire or require buying seeds or going to specialty nurseries. They include plans for shade areas, full sun areas, the 4 seasons. It was AMAZING. I simply couldn't believe how wonderful this book was.

I would say the only criticism I would have is that it I wish the author would have used real photographs of the gardens vs. artistic renderings.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Gorgeous illustrated and simple to use 4 avril 2014

My favorite kind of plant is perennials, and this book focuses exclusively on those. Perennials are the plants that come back year after year. This is a great book for people who want to plant decoratively but have no idea where to start. Perennials are easy to care for, and you don't have to buy new plants every year. Most perennials will get fuller and spread as time goes on, so a sparse initial planting will fill out nicely in the following years make them even more practical. The perennials used aren't new plants, they are tried and true classic garden flowers that have been time tested.

The author has picked plants that handle a wide range of zones pretty well. She also includes a map with a legend of zones so you can figure out which zone you live in. She also has plans and plants for other variables. So if you have an area that's not getting full sunlight, but you still want to plant something there- you can. If you have a really wet corner of your yard, like where a drain spout pours off- there are plants that like the damp conditions and will thrive.

There are tips, zone information on the plants and a lot of information about how to get started with growing a garden. It's clear, simple, and very easy to understand. There is information about the different kind of plants, and Latin names are included. The "Digging Deeper" tips offer ways to expand on the original plan, and do a bit more. If you're a beginning gardener, or someone who wants some nice looking plants growing in your yard but don't know where to start, this is a great place. The photographs of the plants are very well done and will help you pick the perfect theme for your garden. The illustrations of the gardens are also beautiful. The shopping lists show the number of plants to follow the plan.

The plans are simple, it's 5 plants each that are picked by color, appearance and height or to fit a theme, then arranged for a pleasing symmetry. Because of the simple shapes of the beds, they can be expanded, multiplied and joined to create new shapes and larger gardens. Several diagrams are given as examples.

I'll be using one of the plans this year in a shady corner of my yard, and may wind up using more plans in future years.
[I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. I received no other compensation, and my review is my honest opinion of the product.]

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book for both beginning and experienced perennial gardeners 31 mars 2014
Par Karen Eliott - Publié sur Amazon.com
Beautifully illustrated how-to manual on creating small gardens consisting of just five complementary perennial plants. By mixing and matching these 52 "recipes" -- depending on light conditions, soil types, and seasonal performance -- one can create larger gardens as desired. The only element that I miss in this almost-perfect book are suggestions on what shrubs or evergreens would partner with these perennial combinations. But the title is accurate: Perennials are the stars in this book. Nancy Ondra is a gifted plantswoman as well as a generous, creative author/educator.

Heard the author on our local gardening show and was interested in this book because of the interview. It is a very informative book with many, many options on how to create a number of garden types with just five plants. I think this will be very useful for many years to come.
