Lots of ideas for gifts... 2 août 2013
Par J. Cox - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I'm very excited to see a book like this. It is so fun to make gifts for the kids in my life, but sometimes I run out of ideas. I love how there are simple projects even a novice-sewer could tackle, and yet nothing is just a "no-brainer" that you could do yourself without a pattern. There are great ideas for really unique flip dolls, and a super cute whale I'm excited to make. Look out Christmas presents... here I come.

Unique and adorable! 12 août 2013
Par Especially Happy - Publié sur Amazon.com

I've collected craft books from the 70′s at local thrift store for many years and I especially enjoy the crafts for children's toys. I was happy to see a modern, fresh take on those vintage books in this new book. I loved how there were lots of simple toys to make, since I'm definitely a beginner at creating soft toys. They also have a very fun, quirky style that is just adorable! There are patterns in the back, plus complete instructions and illustrations to walk you through each step. They also list the difficulty level, which is nice. I'm working on the Stacking Trees craft (easy level!), which are made from stacked triangular bean bags and will be a really cute decoration for the holidays. They also have a crocodile, fox, winged horse and several really cute flip dolls, like a superhero, circus characters and more.

SHORT ON GOOD DIRECTIONS 7 mars 2014
Par E. L. Diaz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The ideas and designs are really cute and look like a lot of fun.

That being said, I was sorely frustrated by the COMPLETE LACK OF SUFFICIENT PICTURES to show exactly what her very unclear directions said.

I am a very experienced seamstress (55+years) and can make almost anything, but Laura's directions are so incredibly confusing. I spent 3 different days struggling with the butterfly/caterpillar and STILL couldn't get it right. The solitary "drawing" of what to do was very amateurish and unclear as to what to do and what it was supposed to look like. 3 photos all showed the finished product but no clue as to how it got that way. The pattern did not say anything about a lining, which is necessary to complete the toy (at least that's the way it looks in the pics).

Same for the whale. She really needs to re-do this book with some detailed pictures on HOW to do those complicated seams and the tricky toys that turn inside out. I got this book from the library but don't plan to buy it just because of this serious glitch. I was going to give them as a baby shower gift but the outcome was less than satisfying.

Otherwise, these are great ideas for some creative toys for kids. And also a great way to make up stories to go with them.

Some Cute Ideas But Not As Good as I Thought 26 mars 2014
Par K. Groh - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit ( De quoi s'agit-il? )
I was really looking forward to some super creative ideas and while many of these are really clever, they aren't quite up to the level that I thought they would be. Having said that, my 9 year-old daughter has about 6 of the projects that she is dying to do.

What is inside are fun projects that make for perfect gifts although I'm not sure the recipient may be aware of all the work going into them.

My favorite is the crocodile with the zipper mouth.

There are two problems I have with this: Many of these projects are for very young children. There are many with little buttons and small parts that, if not sewn tightly enough, may come off and present as a hazard. There is a small section in the front that talks about age appropriateness of the projects and offers suggestions for alternatives (like sewing an eye on instead of using a button) but I think these need to be repeated with every project.

The second problem I have is (and I'm not trying to be super sensitive) that the last project in the book is a circus flip doll with conjoined twins and a bearded lady. Making a toy for a child who is conjoined is one thing but making it as a toy that is for entertainment is a reminder of how 'we' exploited individuals for entertainment over the years. I just didn't think it was necessary.

What I think is missing is flip dolls like Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, ones that can be used as a story is told.

Adorable projects of various skill levels 25 janvier 2014
Par DelusionalAngel - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit ( De quoi s'agit-il? )
This book is broken up into sections. The first 25 or so pages explain how the book came to be, what supplies you'll need and a brief history of flip dolls.

Next up is the "Zip & Stack" section which includes a stacking tree, nesting flowers, elephant parade, cheshire cat, smiling crocodile, and sly fox. All of these either utilize zippers or stacking methods to make them unique. The elephant and trees are rated easy while the others in this section are moderate.

Next is "Hide, Seek, & Go" which includes a peekaboo turtle, getaway car, bouncy bunny, gulp the whale, winged horse, and nuts n' bolts robot. Pretty self explanatory. The Turtle hides in or out of his shell. Bouncy Bunny uses elastic to make him go. Etc. These are all rated at the moderate skill level.

"Show & Tell" features items that are more for display than play. Good Times watch, bright ideas computer, plucky ukulele, crabby crab, knotty frog, perching bird, lie detector. All of these are listed within the moderate skill range. The best one here is the bright ideas computer -- a cloth computer where the screen is a window just big enough to fit a photo, blank pages, art work, even a small sketchbook.

The "Flip & Turn" section is likely the one that people will buy the book for. The dolls that are a two in one flip. These dolls flip inside out instead of upside down. Cat-Fish, Secret Message chat bubbles, The caterpillar and the butterfly, George and the dragon, The owl and the pussycat, Superhero, Vampire-Bat, Circus flip. There are a mix of easy, moderate, and advanced in this section.

The book includes templates for all projects in the back -- you'll need a way to enlarge them.

These 27 projects are all adorable. I wish it had focussed more on the flip and turn and hide and seek but I could see how those could feel repetitive. The skill levels feel mostly right. I never seem to move out of beginner without lots of 4 letter words being involved but some of these moderate seem fine for me.
