2.0 étoiles sur 5 Quite disappointed, actually 2 avril 2011

I bought this pricey tome and read the book cover-to-cover; it was bland reading. I write this not to disrespect the author but because it was a money-loss for me. I was looking for more substance and was disappointed that this seems to have little new to say and it struck me as "instruction light" that could have benefited from a strong editorial hand. I should have paid more attention to the subtitle's inclusion of "beginner". If you own no other books in colored pencil or graphite, this may be the one for you, I don't know. If you have many other pencil books, as I do, this will tread little new ground. It's not a cheap book, and I regret the purchase.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Must Have For Any Beginning Artist 5 mars 2011
Par Stelli Munnis - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
One of the most intimidating moments for a beginning artist is sitting down to begin a new project, photograph or image in hand, and staring down at a blank page without any idea of where to begin. In Veronica Winters' latest book, Flowers, she provides artists with useful step-by-step instructions on drawing beautiful flowers using graphite and colored pencils. Winters does a great job demonstrating how to break down an image into smaller shapes and forms so one knows what to put down on the paper first. The book contains 21 demonstrations, starting with exercises that are fairly simple to those that require a higher level of skill.

Flowers is chock-full of close-up photographs of flowers, and colorful drawings by the artist. In the book, Winters provides several tips and techniques, including how to hold your pencil, how to see shapes, values, and colors, how to create compositions, as well as information on the application of color, layering, burnishing and blending. The book also contains chapters on color theory, and framing and marketing tips. Flowers is a must have for any beginning artist, even those wishing to draw other subjects, because what one learns from being able to accurately see and draw floral shapes and forms, creates a solid foundation that can be applied to any other art form.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 I should have listened to the reviews. 11 avril 2011

Very disappointing. What a lazy book. Speaking in an informal tone, show a lack of discipline and desire to really edit what you say and how you are teaching. The "step by step" instructions miss a lot of steps. Its like a recipe book without the instructions for the recipes. Most of them do NOT tell you what types of strokes were used, what SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES used on each flower, dont tell you how she blended colors (which color she put first, how she layered the colors, not even the specific colors that were used. many times shell say "I used a lot of greens and pinks and yellows!" Are you kidding! The marketing section basically gives you a list of where you can sell art: in coffee shops, libraries, art galleries (really?) and on social networking sites. Its about 1 1/2 pages! Dont waste your money!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Inspired me to go back to my colored pencils. 18 décembre 2013

A novice with color pencil, and needing further instruction I found "flowers" To be helpful in my learning process. I have not yet completed all of the demonstrations in the textbook but, I am enjoying them. I do know a little bit of CP techniques so, when I read some of the other reviews I thought this would be perfect for me :-) It was! I think a beginner would also find this book helpful as well If you read the book, then follow the exercises, you will learn a lot....this book may not tell you what stroke to use per each exercise but, I feel I'm the artist The choices were outlined in the text therefore, the decision in mine for my own unique work.

If you are an artist of floral things, and are excited about colored pencils this is the book for you. Although some of the techniques are explained faster than others, it explains the basics which is good.
