Présentation de l'éditeur

NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960s. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it.

The ship itself remained silent, drifting.

Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it’s an adventure she can’t refuse.

The ship isn’t vacant, as they presumed.

A disembodied voice rumbles inside Jane’s head, "You are home."

Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien’s help to survive.

The book is a little choppy here and there due to the use of detailed flashbacks, but it's a bit unavoidable in a first book introducing new characters.

Having said that it's a well written and well conceptualized book. It takes some interesting twists with some familiar themes. I'm curious to see if future books retain the edge of hard scifi or slide into abstract soft scifi.

I would recommend the book.

I felt the core story was strong, and I love the Sci-Fi genre of discovering and exploring derelict ships, with the implied mysteries to be solved. I would have loved more in that regard--but it all depends on what audience you are targeting (the hard core sci-fi reader, etc.) I'd give it 3-4 stars on sci-fi story background.

The main character (Jane) was likable and interesting. I felt like I was just getting to know her, but around 60% through I felt like I started to disconnect a bit. The secondary characters were generally fairly thin. I limit my character discussion to save on spoilers.

What detracted mainly for me personally was the language and the sexual fantasies. Sorry, but I'm not interested in either and the story was not improved by either. I can only chalk it up as following the sad trends of both in modern writing. Even if the story were awesome, I could never recommend it to my family and friends for that reason. I'm sure there are many readers that don't care in the slightest--I'm not one of those. For every decision, there is a consequence.

Well written, but something of a cliff hanger, with no indication of a sequel. I would love to read the conclusion of the adventure.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Disappointing - too much focus on romance 15 juillet 2014

There is no nice way to put this. This book is bad.

From the very beginning, you know who the heroic characters are. The commander of the ship is a control freak. Guns are pulled out when there is no need at all. I doubt if any First Contact mission will ever carry guns anyway.

The moment the astronauts have to strip to take a bath, or to treat an injury, then its all suddenly about sex. Can the man stand the sight of a naked body, is his heart beating faster.

In one instance, they have almost got proof of telephathic or similar communication from an entity, they act on it and save themselves, and then ten pages are devoted to the feelings of the lead characters to their temporary close proximity, naked. If the crew of a mission like this cannot focus on the amazing developments unfolding, and are wondering about their latent romantic feelings, I suspect that mission would be doomed.

This is the first book I have ever read and liked so much when finished reading that I immediately went back to page one to read the book again. I really liked this book. Jane Holloway is a refreshing heroine whose character development is exciting to behold. There is an early reference to Carl Sagan's book Contact, whose heroine is named Ellie Arroway. The two characters have similarities and some differences. Jane does not intend to be a leader, but is thrust into the role by an alien whose motives she doubts.

If there are sequels, I hope that Wells stays away from standard space opera plotlines. Also, there is every reason to believe that a sequel will take the ship into harm's way, a.k.a. The Swarm. Wells must be careful to maintain a refreshing plotline going forward. I suspect that she can pull it off. If she does I will be very happy indeed!
