The step-by-step instructions included to create each figure/cake topper is tinker-toy easy -- very user friendly. The toppers include a lion, partially submerged crocodile, elephant, dinosaur, cat, duckling, mouse, swan, frog, butterfly, ladybug, caterpillar, partially submerged shark, pig and piglet, sheep, roses, wired daffodil, carnation, daisy, maple leaf, oak leaf, banana, orange, apple, strawberry, bunch of grapes, blackberries, pineapple, fruit bowl, holly and berries in two different versions, poinsettia, Santa, Christmas tree, angel, snowman, penguins, Diwali Diva lamp, Easter bunny, Valentine hearts, four different fireworks figures, four jack'o lanterns, a Halloween witch, a ghost, four potions and spells figures, two different sets of bride and groom figures, love birds, cuddling teddy bears, champagne bottles, wedding bells, four different bows, baby footprints, baby bottles, a baby bib, pacifier, rag doll, clown, open book, trophy, partially submerged swimmer, doctor, three different musical notes, musical composition paper, tent, dragon fly, lily pads, pond cattails, water lily, watering can, planting pot, garden tool, semi-truck cab, locomotive, tractor, four different handbags and shoes, alien, mermaid, pirate, fairy, pixie, toadstool house, dragon, castle, wizard and crown.
The book is well constructed with a spiral binding, hard cover and quality paper. It is clearly made to last a lifetime. All measurements are provided in both grams and ounces. Thankfully, black ink is used for most of the text but the font size is very small so even with good eyesight it is difficult to read while laying open on a countertop.
A tool and equipment section details everything necessary to craft the figures. Texturing techniques are detailed in their own chapter. This particular skill adds much depth and realism to the figures.
The book will teach the novice user the basics and spark ideas for all levels of cake decorators. This is a well-thought out and carefully crafted book.
Size-wise, the book is small, but content-wise, it's packed! Not only does it contain how to create lots of different little characters in fondant, but it also contains cake recipes, frosting recipes, and recipes to make your own fondant, gumpaste, and marzipan.
I was confused when the book discussed modeling chocolate among all the recipes for all of the above items, but it did not actually include a recipe for modeling chocolate. I'm thinking that this is an error in the book, maybe? It is the first edition, after all. I found a recipe for modeling chocolate online (it's ridiculously simple!), but I think that if it's going to be mentioned with the 'make your own' section of ingredients, then the recipe should be included.
Overall, the book is great! It covers all the tools and techniques you need for creating super cute fondant creatures. I love the step-by-step photos throughout the book. Every page has full-color photos. The pages are thick and glossy.
Be warned that the book is written for a UK audience. Some of the terms used in the book are different for Americans, but this isn't a major hindrance.
This is a well-crafted, interesting, creative, and informative book about making fondant creatures. I feel completely inspired to take my fondant skills to the next level with this. Highly recommended!
