#1 book for learning football from SCRATCH. Howie breaks it down like a pro! 29 mars 2012
Par D. C. Obraztsov - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I am actually a die-hard football fan, and was trying to find a great way to teach my best friend football, who wanted to impress a potential love interest who was football-obsessed himself. Since it was the off-season, I wanted to find other ways to teach just besides footage. So I did a LOT of research of all the best learning football books out there. And I will tell you this: YOU NEED A BOOK. There is no website on the internet that is even close to being as detailed in effective as breaking down the game as this book is.

This book is way better than its competitor, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football (2nd Edition). I think the author organizes the book is a more reader-friendly way, and just has a knack of explaining things better. In The Complete Idiot's Guide, things are a bit more confusing and it does not go into as much detail. Plus, the author of this book is awesome - Howie Long!

This book covers NFL, college football, and even some high school. It's pretty thorough. Not only does it talk about the basics of football and how each position is successfully played, it gives you a history of football and introduces you to some of the most famous players ever (great way to not look like a dummy!) You'll learn all about the different officials, how managers, coaches, and other important people play their role, college/youth/high school football, a chapter specifically dedicated to the NFL, fantasy leagues, the mental aspects of the game, and conditioning and dieting. The last two chapters are about the ten best players in history (according to Long) and the the best ten teams. There's also a chapter about the most heated college football rivalries as well, if that interests you.

This is basically the bible of football. And you know how these lines of books have some snippets in the corner of a lot of pages, with some kind of story or useful tip, but its usually pretty boring? Not here! Howie Long, eight-time Pro Bowl Defensive End, has some very, very interesting stories to share and gives a lot of insightful information into the world of football. He weaves his own experiences throughout the book, but doesn't overdo it. He doesn't pretend to be a quarterback expert, but is very confident when it comes time to discuss defensive ends.

The book also has a long "football speak" section at the back, which is a very useful and nifty reference. This book is great because of the depth it goes into. No shortcuts or cheating here. At times it is information overload and you may need to take time and step back to absorb it all. It's not really a book for dummies. You have to really try to understand. The very basic fundamentals of football are easy enough to grasp, but learning about all of the different plays and line-ups and strategies is a whole different story. However, the book does an amazing job of incorporating graphs into the book to make it much easier to learn. But but don't be frustrated if it's not as simple as you'd thought it would be!

This book is definitely priceless if you are trying to learn football from scratch. There is no internet website that even pales in comparison. Get this book if you are serious about learning some football!

Great book for Football learning, Kindle formatting could be better though. 28 mars 2014

This is a great reference book for those of us who are trying to catch up in the world of football, or are football challenged. I grew up watching football. We're talking football on every single day during the season. My eyes would glaze over and I'd daydream about whatever wasn't football. I'd even go to games and still didn't really understand, nor care to. I married a man who was a football fanatic and was married to him for the worst 23 years of my life.

I came to HATE football, but then I met the man of my dreams who had absolutely zero interest in football. Then one day both of us read or saw something. I can't remember what it was. So we pulled out this book to try and figure out the answer and lo and behold, football seemed actually interesting! Next thing you know, I'm watching football every single time it's on. I've turned into my family, like my grandmother and my ex (who I'm sure would be furious to know I like it now, lol!).

I've seen a lot of reviews who don't like how it's organized. Let's face it, there is no easy way to organize football. That's what makes it complicated enough for you to want to even consider buying a book on the subject, right? Fortunately, it's in parts so you can pick up wherever you wish to. Each part is independent and you can flip back and forth if you need to.

Part I - Terminology, the field setup, uniforms, etc.
Part II - Offense
Part III - Defense
Part IV - Special teams, coaches, etc.
Part V - Fans, announcers, etc.
Part VI - Trivia like stuff
Part VII - Appendices like team lists, more terminology, etc.

This is a great book on how football works and even lists the differences between youth, high school and college football too. It's comprehensive and tells you everything you need to know. What it isn't though, is an almanac. If you want more information on specific teams, then look elsewhere.

I think it's unfair to judge this book harshly because it's so comprehensive. That's ridiculous. If you want something more basic then Wikipedia is the way to go, and that's free.

The only reason it loses a star here is for its Kindle formatting. I like my Kindle dark. That is, I prefer the reverse, a dark background with light writing. I don't know if that has anything to do with its odd format, but half the book is difficult to read. See my photo in Customer Images (a link to it is in the comments of this review).

This book was actually referenced in The Big Bang Theory (S3E6) on CBS. It's a funny clip (for free, look for the youtube link in the comments of this review). If physicists are using it, then it's a sure bet that it's a good book. ;)

If you know nothing-DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK 29 juin 2012

Don't get me wrong... I love football. I bought this book because I want to know MORE about the game. Perhaps the reason I hated this book is because I bought it on my Kindle. Flipping around is difficult on a Kindle. If you read from page one on, you will see that Howie doesn't start from the basics, meaning the positions of the players. He explains the game referencing players positions. If you don't know the positions, it's impossible to follow. It's not that entertaining either. It's a bit dry. Don't waste your money. Try Football 101 if you want to start from the basics, it costs 99 cents. From there move up to this book but I must warn you, Dummies need to steer clear of this book.

Decent Introduction 30 avril 2012
Par Edward J. Barton - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
Those of you who know me may wonder why, after spending so much time around the sport, why I woud ever read this book. Well, it's always good to be a Dummy. Football for Dummies is a fairly decent book - covering everything from what is the NFL to what is a 4-3 Under defense. It is probably a bit much for the complete novice to the game - especially the meaty portions of the Offense and Defense sections. However, someone with a rudimentary knowledge of the game, who may have watched a few on TV or in person, or a parent who has a kid just starting to play will find the content useful.

Even for someone around the game for the better part of 30 years, the book provided interesting insights from Howie Long on what plays are susceptable to a Cover 4 defense and some of the variations on the 4-3 front and their strengths and weaknesses. As with most Dummies books, the style is light and easy to digest, and you certainly will learn something.

So, it may have been a bit rudimentary for the experienced viewer, coach, player or fan, but it is a pretty useful book nevertheless.

A good introduction to the rules and strategies 15 février 2013
Par Eugene Selzer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
I bought the book, hoping to appreciate the game more if I knew more about it. The book was a good introduction to the game and to the finer points of the game. In fact, it offered much more than I was looking for, but it will remain a great reference book when questions about the game come up. I bought it for a Kindle, but found it really needs to be in a format that allows quick and easy flipping of pages.
