Présentation de l'éditeur

Grace Jensen survived a horrific fire at age 15. The flames changed her: badly scarred in body and mind, Grace developed an ability to feel other people's pain. Unable to bear human touch, she has made a small life for herself in Northern California, living with her hoarder mother, tending wounded animals, and falling a little in love with her former doctor. Her safe world explodes when the magnetic Marly Kennet reappears in town; Grace falls right back into the dynamic of their complicated friendship. Marly is the holder of many secrets, including one that has haunted Grace for over a decade: what really happened the night of the fire?

When Marly exhorts Grace to join her in Las Vegas, to make up for the years they have been lost to each other, Grace takes a leap of faith and goes. Although Marly is not entirely honest about her intentions, neither woman anticipates that enlarging Grace's world will magnify her ability to sense the suffering of others--or that she will begin to heal wounds by swallowing her own pain and laying her hands on the afflicted.

This gift soon turns darker when the truth of Marly's life--and the real reason she ended her friendship with Grace--pushes the boundaries of loyalty and exposes both women to danger. With the intensity of a thriller, and the paranormal touch of magic realism, Forged in Grace leads to a dramatic climax in which Grace must choose between healing and revenge.

I was awed by this book. It's a story I have never heard before, a character whose inner world was alien and fascinating. Who is this girl, this damaged yet vibrant person? Burn victim Grace tells a story that no one else can -- how she moves through the world on the edges, unable to stand the touch of others; physical contact brings on pain, but also visions of their lives. Self-preservation also means isolation and lack of intimacy. But Grace's hands-on contact eventually becomes literally a healing touch. The settings of Northern California and Las Vegas reflect both cool and heat, in contrasting echoes of how Grace is feeling, or trying not to feel: flash-point and recovery. Evocative, magical yet earthy, gritty yet soulful -- these contrasts meld beautifully in this spare debut novel.

This book has it all: a main character that drew me in and captured by empathy, a complex supporting cast, intriguing plot, interesting settings, mystery, romance, a touch of magic, and jaw-dropping revelations. The voice is suburb and I connected with Grace from the first page all the way through. The interplay between Grace and her hoarder mother is gripping, but even more intense is the sizzling dynamic between her and her childhood friend, Marly. Every page burns with tension, and I simply couldn't put this book down until I finished it.

At first glance, Grace is an unlikely heroine. She's deeply scarred, inside and out, living a small, sheltered life with limited interactions with the outside world. But her internal world is so vivid, her humor and loneliness so relatable, that you can't help rooting for her. Leaving the comfort of her home and venturing off with the mercurial Marly, Grace must face the secrets of her past (I actually gasped when the truth came out) and the weight of responsibility that comes with her power to heal others but not herself. A wonderful blend of suspense and storytelling, I couldn't put the book down. In fact, I bought it in paperback as well as on my Kindle, because it's the kind of book you want on your shelf to revisit passages again and again.

Forged in Grace is the compelling story of Grace, who was the victim of a treehouse fire when she was 15 years old. The books begins 13 years later, when we meet Grace as the sheltered daughter of a hoarding, protective mother, assistant to one of the doctors who helped her heal after the fire, and a animal lover and rescuer. When her former best friend, wild child Marly, returns to their sleepy seaside town for her grandmother's funeral and asks Grace to return with her to Las Vegas, Grace begins to uncover secrets about herself, Marly, the past together and what really caused the fire that changed their lives.

No spoilers here! This must read thriller crackles with energy, imagery and moving messages. From the writer of Make a Scene, Write Free! Attracting the Creative Life (with Rebecca Lawton), and Milk & Ink: a Mosaic of Motherhood, Jordan Rosenfeld's debut novel is intriguing, thoughtful and blazes a trail for indie authors to follow.

Fire. Abuse. Pain. Hurt.

Hope. Healing. Friendship. Las Vegas.

Jordan E. Rosenfeld takes on all these subjects and more in the beautiful Forged in Grace.

Inhabiting her diverse characters with ease, delving deep into language with obvious skill and care, Rosenfeld brings a lot of love to this story. She grabbed me with the first page of Grace and didn't let me go until I'd reached the satisfying ending. I've read it twice already and--when it's out in hard copy--will keep it on my select shelf to read again through the years.

This book is at once an escape, a square-off with the forces of evil, an antidote to hate, and a recipe for how to love each other. Don't miss this well-crafted, moving tale from a rising literary star.
