Apls sans La Route des Grandes Alpes! 3 juillet 2012
Par Anna Shlimovich - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
On my recent travel from Lyon to Turin I had decided to drive from the former city to the latter, and the road inevitably took me through the French Alps: Annecy, Chambery, Grenoble and ultimately crossing tunnel de Frejus to Italy. I also made a detour to Chamonix and Geneve. The scenery was simply breathtaking, indescribable; the roads excellent and the whole voyage crossing the Alps was the most memorable (only of great memories, though!). While being there, I had read in my France guide by Michelin about the magnifiscent Route des Grandes Alpes and I resolved to see it soon.

Now I got this guide while preparing for touring La Route Des Grandes Alpes; and the guide mentions it on page 10, as No.1 driving tour, but then, amazingly, there is NO MAP of it!!! No description, nothing at all. There is Route Napoleon, but it is a different itinerary. So as of today I had to use the good old France guide which has a map and description of La Route Des Grandes Alpes.

Thus I'd love to ask the editors - how can it be that a travel guide specialised in French Alps does not include its most famous itinerary, although it makes references to it???

Next is another quirk - there is no one big-picture map of the region the guide aims to cover. The South French Alps are inside the front cover; the North French Alps are inside the back cover, but if you'd like to see the WHOLE thing and get an idea where a certain place is relative to others, you are out of luck. I ended up using this guide with Google maps, but what to do when you are on the road and without internet access???

The guide has plethora of local maps, city's maps, but yet again, it seems to be designed for those already possessing a very good knowledge of the region. Otherwise, it is very difficult to use, with too much too different information cluttered and scattered over its pages. Michelin has lost its edge, to my taste, as they had been an excellent reference for cultural sights, but then they diluted their guides with hotel and eateries info, which, like a stock market advice, is too old when it is published. If one checks a recommended hotel, it is by now overpriced; besides, it does not speak of B&Bs which tend to come and go quickly.

I still might recommend this guide for an in-depth look in local details, but an absence of the Route of Grand Alps and an overall map its value is really diminished. Alas, the more modern a Michelin guide is, the less value it provides, usually being shallow and all over the place. Why are recent editions so poor, compare to vintage ones that concentrated on beautiful and cultural attractions? It is a pity.
OK, but lack the modern flexability 2 septembre 2013

Data has proven to be accurate but the lack of an interactive map, a place to quickly save our planned route and many other "standard" features meant we used this as a backup to the internet.
Bottom line is that information is only as good as it is if you can find it and save it.

Please, Please, Please Michelin have an app so our next trip we can use it.

As always with Michelin guides, excellent detail, easy to read and printed on high quality paper. Highly recommended to travellers in this part of france.
