Really very nice, wonderfully written, a thorough analysis with lots of good humor and insight. A must if you are planning to live in France; I moved to France 20 years ago, and still this book made me discover so many new aspects of French life and culture !

Polly Platt understands us, the French, like few "Anglo-Saxons" before her. Her book is wonderfully affectionate, very funny and VERY accurate. She has lived here for over 30 years and it shows: she managed successfully the difficult switch from America's low-context civilization, where most things are explained to newcomers, to a high-context country like France where you either know the unwritten rules, or you might as well give up, because nobody is going to tell you. In this very anecdotal book she *does* tell her readers the secrets of understanding France.

It's an interesting book and quite funny. But from my point of view there are too many examples in the book and not enough explanation of the French behaviour..
