Descriptions du produit

This sumptuous volume presents more than 80 full-colour reproductions of some of the most highly prized French manuscript illuminations in the world. This outstanding volume is the perfect introduction to an exquisite art form that flourished for centuries before the advent of the printing press, but that is now making a comeback in the world of bespoke art and design. The full-colour reproductions of these masterpiece works range from a Bible made during the ninth century, to an exquisite book of prayers written and illuminated by the French master Jean Pierre Rousselet c.1720.

Amazing book! 5 février 2010
Par Lara Sandling-bennett - Publié sur Amazon.com
When I ordered this book for my husband I was hopeful that there would be some good examples of illumination for the period. When I got the book, I was floored at how many well detailed photos were included. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for detailed illumination examples of the middle ages.

The Getty has provided readers with an excellent set of short guides to illuminated manuscripts
The author has written an excellent introduction that mainly concentrates on the illustrations. Into this he weaves brief comments on periodisation - Carolingian,Ottonian ,Romanesque, etc along with features that may suggest that the manuscript is of a given period or a give area of manuscript production.
The stellar feature is the excellent colour illustration- these only have brief reference notes next to them so you need to turn to the appropriate part of the introduction for the details

This is an excellent introduction to French Manuscripts- the first one is from Tours 845 AD , the latest about 1680- Louis XIV
The book is a bit longer than Amazon say, the preface and Introduction run I-xxx ie 30 pages plus the 113 pages of illustration
The whole series is highly recommended

Others books to think about include---
The older extensive relatively inexpensive George Braziller series is also well worth getting- it is also extensively illustrated in colour

Taschen's Masterpieces of Illuminations has a number of illustrations of very important manuscripts that it is worth knowing about. There is plenty of information in the text with on or more pages of excellent illustration opposite. There are artist biographies at the back
Masterpieces of Illumination: The World's Most Famous Manuscripts 400 To 1600

C de Hamel has A History of Illuminated Manuscripts written an excellent text based study on Manuscripts which is also well illustrated

Excellent overview of French manuscripts at the Getty Musuem. The Getty has one of the foremost collection in the western United States and this reasonably-priced paperback has good images of the plates from a variety of French manuscripts.
