Présentation de l'éditeur

You'll find plenty of bodies stretched out on a summer beach - but they're not usually dead...

In a British seaside holiday resort at the height of the season, you would expect to find a promenade and a pier, maybe some donkeys, 'Kiss-Me-Quick' hats, candy floss and kids building sandcastles. You would not expect to find a naked corpse, punctured with stab wounds, lying on the sand.

Chief Inspector George Gently is called in to investigate the disturbing murder. The case has to be wrapped up quickly to calm the nerves of concerned holidaymakers. No one wants to think that there is a maniac on the loose in the town but with no clothes or identifying marks on the body, Gently has a tough time establishing who the victim is, let alone finding the killer. In the meantime, who knows where or when the murderer might strike again?

More than a mystery, you get to see how a detective looks at a case, asks questions, analysis the information obtained and comes to a reasonable conclusion. I have become a fan of the BBC TV program, but the books give a different point of view, much more detail. If George Gently really existed I would like to have a conversation with him, he would be an interesting man!

Gently is called in when the local police can not identify a naked body on the beach that floated in with the tide. It takes a bit of luck and Gently's experience in asking the right questions to identify the man. But then the fun starts in trying to determine the motive and the murderer. Unexpected, there is an international spy twist that causes Special Services to arrive. Gently holds off premature action until he can trick the culprits into identifying themselves in a dramatic ending.

This is a well-told tale that you will enjoy.

Tis is one of the first three books in the series, and is well-written.Inspector George Gently is gruff, but thorough and truly a great detective. He is insightful, and a great teacher. There's no sidekick like on the series, but this is well-done writing of police procedures.

Gently is called in to investigate a dead body on the beach under the pier at Starmouth. There is nothing to identify the corpse and the case leaves Gently scratching his head and eating many peppermint creams. It seems as though he may have to give up and admit defeat until he manages to find out a bit about the dead man by asking the right questions of the right people. It soon becomes clear that there may be a link with the sudden appearance of counterfeit US dollar bills which keep appearing.

I found the book interesting reading as it shows how different things were in the nineteen fifties. This is a case with an international aspect to it and Gently wonders whether he will find it taken off him by Special Branch before he has really got to grips with it. I like the characters in these novels and the interaction between them. There are flashes of humour and an intriguing mystery which will keep the reader guessing.

Readers today may find it a little old fashioned as there is little on the page violence and no bad language. The attitudes and morals were different then and the book needs to be read in the context of the time in which it was written rather than judged by today's standards. If you like books which present you with a puzzle to be solved then you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy the Golden Age detective story writers then you will enjoy Alan Hunter's Gently series.

There's nothing like discovering a large body of well-written, erudite whodunnits at the beginning of the long summer holidays. I would have liked more Dangerous Davies, but Gently will do.
