Artists falling out 8 avril 2012
Par Damaskcat - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Gently has been promoted to Superintendent and fears he is going to be desk bound from now on so when he hears of an interesting murder case in Northshire he really wants to be out there investigating it. Fortunately his boss realises that Gently's skills and knowledge of the area are too good to waste behind a desk and when the request comes for assistance he is despatched.

A woman has been murdered almost under the windows of a police station and her husband is naturally the first suspect but she seems to have antagonised most of the members of an artists' group to which she belongs. She was murdered immediately after a meeting of the Palette Group and had arguments with more than one of the other members.

I found the characters well drawn and believable. Gently himself is always interesting - self contained, calm and thoughtful he frequently maddens his colleagues with his apparently off the wall theories. But they know him of old and know that he is almost always right even when he seems to be completely wrong. I enjoyed the descriptions of arguments in the art world with its sometimes eccentric characters. The victim's husband - a Flying Officer Kite type with the moustache to match - is extremely well done.

The ending of the book is excellent with a nail biting car and plane chase and then Gently's interrogation of a suspect which baffles his colleagues until the conclusion is reached. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys crime novels which do not contain graphic violence and which have a strong psychological basis.

The author portrays a world which has completely disappeared and which younger readers will not remember. The days when you had to go through the exchange when you wanted to make a trunk call, there were no mobile phones and no CCTV cameras and shops in general were not open on a Sunday and there were no fast food outlets, except fish and chips, and no supermarkets. People and their motivations and behaviour are still the same whatever their surroundings. This is book seven in the series.

Read it for the wonderful prose (and the story)! 14 janvier 2012

I have read the other Gently books and found them worthwhile; when I saw that this had no reviews, I wanted to write one so that no one missed this Gently case. The plot is interesting and credible, and the characters believable. What makes this Gently case so enjoyable is the writing. It's beautifully and unaffectedly crafted - if your fairy god-mother ever asks you whose writing you'd like to emulate, you would not go wrong to reply with Alan Hunter's name. Enjoy!

Too much questioning of the suspects 3 novembre 2014
Par Kent Price - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
The only female member of a painting group is murdered on her way home after a meeting. Her husband who is not a painter is the prime suspect. Chief Inspector Gently soon discovers there are a number of painting group members who had reasons to dislike and perhaps even murder her.

There is a bit of action, but there is too much interrogation and verbal fencing with the different suspects all of whom are concealing something. Eventually, Gently wears down the suspects and comes to the truth.

There is too much questioning of the suspects for my taste. However, the book is worth reading.

I like the Alan Hunter Gently books as I saw the shows on PBS. I was looking for the book " Gently in the Catheral", the last show in the Gently series, to see if Gently and Bacchus died in the end. I hope not: Long Live Gently!

Gently once again uses logic to solve a crime 2 mars 2014

If you are a George Gently fan this yarn will be your cup of tea. I sometimes think that Alan Hunter writes much like Agatha Christie in that there is a lot of distracting dialogue. Not a lot wrong with that, but i cant help feel its a little overdone with this story. Nevertheless I hasten to recommend the book to all Gently fans.
