Présentation de l'éditeur

The first in-depth biography of one of music's most fascinating, colourful and innovative characters. This book is the most comprehensive history yet of the life, music and cultural significance of the last of the great black music pioneers and the era which spawned him. Clinton stands alongside James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone as one of the most influential black artists of all time who, along with his vast P-Funk army took black funk into the US charts and sold out stadiums by the mid 1970s with his mind-blowing shows and legendary Mothership extravaganzas. The book contains first hand interview material with Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Jerome Bigfoot Brailey, Junie Morrison, Bobby Gillespie, Afrika Bambaataa, Jalal Nuriddin (Last Poets), Juan Atkins, John Sinclair, Rob Tyner (MC5), Ed Sanders (The Fugs), Chip Monck ("The Voice of Woodstock ) plus other P-Funk associates and friends. The book presents an insiders' view of the rise of Parliament and Funkadelic from the doowop era and LSD-crazed early shows through to P-Funk s huge rise, the era of the Mothership and beyond.

If you have the albums, you have this book. This is nothing more that a compilation of liner notes, liner notes written by other people. The author is all over the place. The editor should have been fired. If one starts a paragraph talking about recording "a", then mentions recording "b"; a reader should be able to assume the author is speaking of a specific time period. Not in this book.

If you remove the words "nascent," "lysergic," and "Funkadelics", the book would be much thinner. The author is British and uses lots of British slang while trying to use American slang. The two don't mix. I needed a British Urban Dictionary to figure things out. Auto-correct is used and we all know what auto-correct can do. In a pub, were they "throwing back pints" or "points" as the book says? Again, it could be British slang. Half of a page was missing and repeated a few pages later.

There are inaccuracies, but none that change the whole gist of the book. One simply has to do the math to figure out what adds up and what doesn't. This was written for the Funkateer by a Funkateer. Both are blinded by the party and the fun of what is P-Funk, and both put George Clinton on much too high a pedestal.

My copy is going to the Goodwill, it's definitely not a keeper.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 As this book is about my all time favorite band, I read every word 27 octobre 2014

As this book is about my all time favorite band, I read every word. There was lots of information that was new to me. That's unusual, as I have followed these guys for 40 plus years. However, the editing terrible. The book contradicts itself often, misspells names (sometimes) and is just plain wrong other times. I have to question everything written here, as a result. Up to three stars because it's packed with info. Only three stars because I don't know how much I trust the info.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Great book idea turns into a mess 8 septembre 2015

The back cover describes this is "the first in-depth biography of one of music's most outrageous and innovative characters." George Clinton was indeed all that, but this book is far from a detailed account of his life. It's actually more about Parliament and Funkadelic and its various offshoots, than Clinton himself. As other reviewers have noted, this book is a hodge-podge collection of random quotes and observations, poorly edited and organized. If you can read through this bland history without yawning or nodding off, you should be congratulated!

The author is an unabashed P-Funk fan, but that ends being a negative. His overly enthusiastic ramblings water down the writing and the power of this book, as well as obliterating any objectivity or anything remotely critical of the P-Funk family. Instead, we are forced to read about the authors' accounts of having his albums signed by Clinton and other P-Funk musicians, and recalling where and when he first bought those records. Most of all, the writing is just weak, and the lack of any coherent editing leaves the whole tale disjointed and dull. Which is a crime, considering how powerful and exuberant (I'm trying not to use the word "funk" too much; something the author would have been wise to have done) the music by Parliament and Funkadelic was ... and still is.

There were many times that I had to re-read a paragraph (most of them needlessly too long) in order to figure out which album that the author was talking about, or who was being quoted. His stories and accounts bounced around so much, that it gave me a headache. What is he talking about now? At other times, the author would go off on strange, unrelated tangents, giving us history lessons on things like Blaxploitation films or Earth Wind & Fire tours, without telling us why this was critical to the P-Funk story. Where was that editor?

If you want to read a regurgitation of album reviews and tepid tales of concert tours, perhaps you'll enjoy this book. It's not awful; there are actually quite a few interesting tidbits and details about the various album projects that Clinton and the other musicians participated in making over the years. But this book could have, and should have, been a lot more interesting and revealing.

Pretty good read. I wish there was more information on the women of P-Funk, G-Funk that is. Other than that pretty good. I'm a fan of P-Funk for over 40 years and I'm a little critical of books on the subject, hence the four stars.
