Revue de presse

A pleasure to read. As Huey Long said about himself, 'sui generis.' I can already see the marquee: GEORGE 'n' HILLY TONIGHT!" --Tom Wolfe

Présentation de l'éditeur

A funny and intimate portrait of a relationshipgleaned from the author and his fianceé’s couple’s therapy sessions.

After roughly three-and-a-half years of dating his girlfriend Hilly, New York Observer nightlife and society reporter George Gurley decided that it was time to get married. Well, engaged. No rush. One day at a time. George had witnessed New York husbands —frail, meek, ashamed, and henpecked, pushing double wide strollers as their battle-ax wives babbled on about “dinner with friends”—and it wasn’t for him.

Enter Dr. Selman: psychiatrist, obliging listener, and unwitting participant in George’s own journalistic project—a no-holds-barred portrait of intimacy taken from transcripts of the couple’s therapy sessions. George can be compared to a Carrie Bradshaw 2.0; that is, if Carrie were a hard drinking, ill-reputed man-about-town writing frankly about sex, love, marriage, and his own psychological baggage.

Hilarious, thought-provoking, and compelling,  George & Hilly  reveals the uncensored, unselfconscious psyche of a man on the brink of matrimony.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved this book 26 février 2012
Par Amanda J - Publié sur Amazon.com
I picked this book up at a friend's house and could not put it down. I don't have as much time to read as I used to, so a book has got to get me right away and make me not want to turn off the bedroom reading lamp.

Gurley is an entertaining writer and very on point with his observations.

In my opinion, this book is the equivalent of Sex in the City but told from a guy's perspective and seems mostly genuine. It's totally entertaining on many levels. I don't think that I have ever really read a book about relationships from this male vantage point. How many men do you know who are straight and want to talk about their relationship in such detail... zero... right? In some ways I felt like I was spying into the male psyche. This should be required reading for women who want to know more about what the other half is thinking.

There were parts of the book where I literally flinched, laughed and got pissed off... either because it was a gross description of his apartment, a recounting of an adventure out or something so selfish that I wanted to reach into the book and shake him.

If you want an easy read, a good laugh and an authentic take on the modern relationship in the big city from a guy's perspective, this is it. It's a great departure from the chick lit that I also like to read. Two thumbs up.

I wish more people had the courage to write like this. A combination of Dominick Dunne and Salinger sprinkled with a humanized sense of self deprecation and humor. Perhaps not for the Dan Brown fans of the world, but definitely for those who appreciate a thought provoking read. Keep them coming Mr. Gurley. Two thumbs way up.

In addition to echoing the well-deserved accolades expressed by previous reviewers, I'd like to note that this wonderful George Gurley book may be enjoyed on two completely different levels. If you're looking for a quick, fun, lighthearted read, this book will delight you. You needn't read the chapters in any particular order, since they are, for the most part, independent and self-contained. I personally skipped around and didn't feel disadvantaged in doing so. George, as always, is adroit, funny, self-effacing and a master of the language. George is a skilled practitioner of employing words from our passive vocabulary -- words we all know, but rarely utilize ourselves. George's writing leads to an easy but rich reading experience.

On a deeper level, this book provides some of the keenest insight into human psychology this side of Sigmund Freud. By tape-recording the most intimate dialogue of their real-life therapy sessions, George and Hilly give us, not just a glimpse, but an entire college-level course in romantic and sexual relationships. Perhaps a dozen times while reading this book, I was startled to realize that I was not the only person on earth who entertained such twisted thoughts or anxieties about the opposite sex or about commitment. To that extent, this book is a superb therapeutic volume in itself, and helped me psychologically in a way that few dedicated books on psychology ever have. Send me a bill, Dr. Gurley. You've earned it.

It is easy to overlook the video link on this page. Watch the video! It showcases George and Hilly chatting about themselves and about this book. The video provides a realistic flavor of the book's content. If you're one of George's many fans from The New York Observer or Vanity Fair, you already know what to expect, and George won't disappoint you here. Tom Wolfe himself described this book as "A pleasure to read." I agree wholeheartedly.

If forced at gunpoint to proffer a critical comment, it would be, not with the book's content, but perhaps with the color scheme of the cover design, which suggestions that this book is entertaining primarily to women. While this book is indeed a great read for any woman, I, as a straight man, found the book "right down my alley." As another reviewer stated, this book is a "Sex and the City" from a man's point of view as well, and this book is every bit as good as the HBO series. In fact, NBC seriously considered airing their own series based solely on this book. They should have done so.

George Gurley reveals in these pages what most men would never confess about themselves or about their relationships. And this leads me to point out a personality-conflict within George himself that not even he recognizes nor documents: For a man to boldly and publicly articulate his own insecurities, anxieties, and failures in such intimate detail, he must be a man of confidence, emotional strength, and rare talent. Thank you, George and Hilly, for sharing your entertaining and instructive story with us. A well-earned five stars!!!

I was a fan of the "George & Hilly" column in the New York Observer. This takes those columns and rounds out the story of these two misfit, star-crossed lovers. Like many of us in our 30's and 40's, George and Hilly have found the right person but are afraid to commit. Unlike most of us, they are willing to show all their flaws, foibles, idiosyncrasies and preferences. Imagining their apartment and how they interact is like being a fly on the wall and sometimes like looking in the mirror.
Gurley's writing is funny and descriptive. His honesty is powerful. He gives us an inside view into his thoughts and fears, without becoming a Woody Allen type of neurotic. Perhaps his reporter's background and Midwest upbringing allow him to be forthright about his experiences as he struggles to commit.
Best of all, George and Hilly have found their happy ending. I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapter in their lives and reading more of Gurley's writing.

For years, George's articles were my favorite part of the New York Observer. When he interviewed celebrities, his bits of the conversation were usually the most interesting part of the piece! I couldn't wait for the book, and I read it in two hours. It's the story of a hard partying reporter and his long-suffering girlfriend, and his descriptions of the ups and downs of his relationship, as well as the hilarious situations he gets himself into (hungover with a baby panda) will make you laugh, cry, want to slap him and want to give him a hug all at the same time. I wish there were more male narrators with George's sophistication, wit, and gift for spot-on observation. Bring on the movie!
