“Getting Started with BizTalk Services” gives a unique perspective and understanding around BizTalk Services not only around the product but also how to leverage it in order to successfully deliver real world enterprise systems. The authors draw on their deep technical insights into BizTalk Services gained from building the product itself and from designing and implementing real world integration solutions using BizTalk Services.

BizTalk Services represents the next evolution of the BizTalk Server platform, it’s a major shift from the previous on-premise architecture of BizTalk Server taking the platform to both cloud and hybrid models, as such there are some significant new concepts that engineers need to understand in order to be successful with the new platform. The authors do a great job of articulating this to the reader, the writing style makes the book approachable to both people new to the platform as well as seasoned BizTalk veterans wishing to up skill to the new platform. Jon and Karthik do a great job of guiding the reader through this exciting new technology. I was asked to review the book and found it an extremely useful resource in learning about BizTalk Services.

I'm so glad there is finally a book regarding WABS (Windows Azure BizTalk Services). Reading this book was so much easier and better way for me to get started on WABS. When it comes to learning a new technology, I often like to start with a sample/example, and this book starts with HelloWorld example. Then, it goes deep drive to each component and its concept. Since I've already worked with BizTalk Server, it was fairly quick for me to read the entire book, but this book was written in a way that even non-BizTalk people can easily understand. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Being involved with Biztalk Server since 2006 with several versions of the on-premise product, I thought moving to Windows Azure Biztalk Services (WABS) would be an easy task. Recompile, deploy to the new environment, then you're done, right?

No.

With Biztalk Services, Microsoft is solving many of the same problems solved by Biztalk Server, but with a new set of artifacts, new vocabulary, and new processes to learn. That's where "Getting Started With BizTalk Services" comes in handy.

Even though the title says "Getting Started", and the authors say they assume no prior BizTalk knowledge, I was pleased to find that the book was quite useful for someone who had plenty of BizTalk experience. Thoroughout the book there are contrasts made between BizTalk Server and WABS. The authors even devote a chapter to "Moving to BizTalk Services", highlighting many of the differences between Biztalk server and WABS.

I also found that I liked the organization of the book. For instance, separating the tasks of Enterprise Application Integration and Business to Business Integration into different chapters. I found this helpful as the two concepts involve very different requirements.

Besides the expected material on the artifacts associated with a WABS solution, the authors also included a chapter on troubleshooting. I found this to be extremely helpful, since most books seem to tell you how to create a greenfield project (the usual "Hello World"), but don't acknowledge how much time is spent with the care and feeding of existing systems.

Overall, a worthy addition to my virtual bookshelf.

Getting Started with BizTalk Service is guidance book, rather than a reference manual, that nicely summarizes and well organized in 8 chapters and proximally 150 pages that will cover all of the basic concepts of the Microsoft Azure BizTalk Services like Messages and Transforms, Bridges, EAI and B2B Integration, API, Tracking and Troubleshooting and the process of moving from on-premises to the cloud.

Although the authors referring that knowledge of BizTalk Server is neither assumed nor expected, in my opinion is important and very helpful to have this prior knowledge of BizTalk Server to fully understand the book for a simple reason, this is not a step-by-step book that will describe all the steps that you need to do implement solution in BizTalk Services, it will not explain how to create a schema from scratch for example, because it is not the purpose of the book. Nevertheless the code samples provided with the book helps to really understand how to practically apply and strengthen the main concepts of BizTalk Services.

I especially liked the last chapter of the book “Moving to BizTalk Services” that address the challenges of moving BizTalk Server solutions on-premises to BizTalk Services. I have the pleasure to be a speaker in the last BizTalk Summit 2014 – London event along with Jon Fancey where he did a great presentation about “How to move to BizTalk Services” so I recommend you to watch this session after reading this chapter.

Although closely following BizTalk Services since the beta version, and speak about it in many technical sessions, I did learn a few things with the book… so I personally recommend this book to anyone interested in BizTalk Services or in integration technologies whether it be a beginner (with no BizTalk Server knowledge), in this case this case should consider this book as a guide and deepen their knowledge using other sources, or an expert. This book is a perfect start if you wish to start understand BizTalk Services.

The title of the book is getting started and that is what the book is about: getting a kick start to BizTalk Services. But it is more than just an overview. It touches all aspects of BizTalk Services and dives deeper in some chapters. So after reading this book you're not only familiar with BizTalk Services, but because of the step by step examples you're also capable of building your first BizTalk Services integration.
The book is clearly written, touches the surface where applicable and dives deeper when necessary. And example is the B2B integration with EDI. This is a common scenario which can be implemented using BizTalk Services. The book dedicates an entire chapter to this.
Recommended read.
