Présentation de l'éditeur

In his seminal book Life After Life, Dr Raymond Moody introduced the near-death experience (NDE) to the world, sharing the true stories of those who have returned from the brink of death.

In this stunning sequel, Dr Moody returns to the area in which he made his name and provides compelling new evidence that NDEs are not the mere biological products of brains in the process of shutting down. Here, he shares the eyewitness accounts of those who have shared the experiences of the dying: the 'empathic death experiences' that occur when those gathered at the bedsides of the dying have their own visions of the afterlife.

Brimming with case studies and drawing upon a lifetime's research as well as recent findings, this important book will change the way we think about life and death. As the baby-boomer generation begins to lose those they love, and international scientific research continues in this area, Dr Raymond Moody's book could not be more timely.

Quatrième de couverture

The first ever book to explore the phenomenon of' Shared Death Experiences'

In his classic work Life after Life, Dr Raymond Moody recorded case histories of people who were clinically dead and then revived. Introducing the concept of the NDE (Near Death Experience), he revolutionised the way we think about dying. Since the publication of that multi-million copy bestseller, hundreds of thousands of people have contacted Dr Moody with their own true stories, leading to a startling new discovery - the Shared Death Experience.

Glimpses of Eternity investigates for the very first time the extraordinary accounts of healthy people, friends and relatives who have had their own inexplicable experiences at the bedsides of the dying. Discover how entire families have seen strange visions or even accompanied their loved ones halfway to heaven. Others tell of witnessing life reviews, during which they learned things they never knew about those on the point of passing over...

Dr Moody challenges many current scientific theories about NDEs; for if Near Death Experiences are simply a product of the dying brain, how on earth can so many people in good health share them? Letting the compelling evidence speak for itself, Glimpses of Eternity offers hope and comfort for us all.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The closest thing to PROOF of the after life that I have come across! A truly important book for everyone! 27 septembre 2010

I am pleased to be able to rate this great book by Dr. Raymond Moody and Mr. Paul Perry! They have done a wonderful job of describing the experience known as the Shared Death Experience (SDE), where those at the bedside of those passing have reported experiencing events as the dying person experiences them: hearing beautiful other-worldly music, seeing tunnels into the light, the appearance of deceased loved ones/friends, a distortion of the geometry of the room (often described as an hour-glass shape) and in some cases, the vision of the panoramic life review showing details of all that the dying loved one has experienced as if in 3D and all at once in this "panoramic" vision and the emotions are co-lived, so to speak, with the one who is passing!

There is no possible way that the SDE can be ascribed to the dying brain (lack of blood flow, lack of oxygen, buildup of carbon dioxide, etc.), as those in attendance are healthy, are not ill, and do not have dying brains!

I highly recommend this work of Dr. Moody and and Mr. Perry to everyone who wants to know that happens after the last breath on Earth is taken. You will find the pages of this book literally filled with light, and with hope!!

Kudos to the authors for a truly great book!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Intriguing Evidence 28 septembre 2010

This book pleasantly surprised me. Having associated Dr. Raymond Moody with the near-death experience, I assumed that the book was about NDEs. And having read all of Moody's books on the subject as well as three other recently-published books about the NDE by distinguished authors, I doubted the book had anything new to offer. But I assumed wrong. While a certain kind of NDE is discussed, the book is primarily about shared death experiences, which falls more into the area of death-bed visions than NDEs.

Shared death experiences were discussed many years ago by pioneering researchers Frederic W. H. Myers, Edmund Gurney, and Sir William Barrett, but there has been very little, if anything, written about them in recent years. Moody and Paul Perry recount some of those old experiences after relating a number of intriguing cases Moody has collected.

In effect, shared-death experiences involve visions or experiences shared by the dying person and another person who is not near death, usually a loved one or someone tending to the dying person. While many of them happen when they are together in the same room, some take place when they are miles apart. The phenomena include seeing strange bright lights in the room or misty vapors rising from the dying person, observing deceased relatives or loved ones in the room, encountering "heavenly realms," hearing strange music, and even the non-dying person witnessing the dying person's life review or having a life review of his or her own.

"Shared death experiences deal with the notion of a variety of extra senses, including telepathy, clairvoyance, remote viewing, astral projection, spontaneous out-of-body experiences and perhaps other that I have not yet anticipated," Moody explains.

It is all a bit mind boggling, but some very credible people are quoted. For example, Dr. Joan Borysenko, a Harvard University psychology professor and author of several popular books, tells of being at her mother's bedside as she was dying and having an out-of-body experience in which she (Borysenko) witnessed all of her good and bad deeds, including fights with her mother and mind games they had played with each other.

There are a number of stories related by fellow physicians, including one by an anesthesiologist who reported crossing into another dimension after touching a dying patient's hand, then seeing what he took to be deceased members of the patient's family.

Moody tells of his own experience involving strange happenings at the bed of his dying mother, experiences witnessed not only by him but by other family members. A number of the stories involve more than one person witnessing a particular phenomenon.

After examining and dismissing the arguments skeptics will likely have against the reality of the shared death experience, Moody opines that they tell us more about the afterlife than the NDE and that they are "the key to proving the existence of an afterlife."

This book is advertised as "groundbreaking." Actually, Myers, Gurney, and Barrett broke the ground more than a century ago, but, unfortunately, the land was vacated soon thereafter. Hopefully, some real building will start with this excellent book.

Though he says his opinions have not changed, in recent years, Dr. Moody has appeared to me increasingly careful not to overstate the implications of the near death experience, drawing no final conclusions, and regarding these experiences as absolute proof of nothing. In my opinion, this prudence is a fine example of critical thinking wed to intellectual integrity, and has done nothing except reinforce his credibility as a researcher. That is why I believe he is sincere and his logic is sound when he concludes that the accounts of shared death experiences presented in this book represent the best evidence we have to date for the continuation of consciousness after death. In my opinion, unlike many individual near death experiences, the shared death experiences of many highly credible individuals found in this book are completely inexplicable in materialistic terms. Honestly, my mind is boggled by this information! Read the book and see if you can think of a strictly physical explanation for this phenomenon. My own conclusion is that at best, this is the most compelling evidence gathered thus far for consciousness functioning independently of the body, and at worst, it's evidence for telepathy. Think about that! Excellent job, Raymond Moody and Paul Perry!

What is it about this stuff that makes me weep? I mean every other page weep? It just gets to me. I was a hard core Buddhist for many years, and there was so much fear concerning the experiences of the afterlife bred into us- that because of these dangers and the very real possibility of rebirth in lower realms, etc, we should spend our lives deep in intensive spiritual practice, as to save the world from it's ignorance. Which is immense, tragic, and unnecessary.

But Moody reveals a softer, safer, more relative (get it?) picture of spirituality. More about family, connections, and a very loving universe in it's Center. A more Feminine spirituality, a compliment to the Masculine Buddhist, Nondual and Christian paths, transcendentally obsessed as they can be.

So I just weep reading this stuff. Thanks Dr. Moody..........it's a short quick book that will blow your freakin' mind. Did mine anyway!
