Lovely deck BUT kind of strange gold foil treatment 18 mars 2013

Pre ordered this deck and was excited to receive today. I quickly took off the cellophane and started going through the cards. I liked the cardstock, the thin borders and the size of the cards (if you will be shuffling them, a good size, not too big or small). All looked GREAT for over about 1/3 of the cards, and then I started noticing what looked like incomplete, chipped or cracked foil. On some of the cards, it's obviously MEANT to be that way for shading purposes. Other cards just look like the gold foil is starting to chip off, it's uneven and rough between where foil was, and where it wasn't, to make more peeling possible even with minimal handling. Two of the suits of the deck look really good, two have issues with the foil. I have the Visconti Sforza by the same company and that deck has about the same amount of gold foil and it isn't cracking or peeling. I would have given this deck five stars if not for that. Again, the majority of the cards look just perfect, which makes those with what looks like defective foil all the more noticeable.
I contacted the company and hopefully can get some answers, which I will post here. UPDATE: Lo Scarabeo company in Italy, who is the publisher of this deck (even though Llewellyn is the US distributor), emailed me back within hours, which is to their credit. I was told the "simulated flaws" were intended and all decks in the first edition will have them. I believe there will be a second edition of this deck MINUS these intentional flaws to make it look vintage, but not sure when that will be. I was advised to hang onto this one as it will be a limited first edition run with the vintage look. Personally, I don't think the deck is totally aesthetically pleasing, in that most cards look pristine, with perfect foil, some look like the foil was just left off in places to shade and then some look like it is just peeling and defective, not vintage. I AM keeping this deck though, as I like it except for the problem with the foil, but may touch up some spots with gold paint. For those who don't find this type of "simulated flaw" distracting, then you may well wish to purchase. If you do decide to purchase, I would get while it's still on sale.

Great deck! 5 juin 2013

I really like this deck. The images are crisp and clear. Roberto De Angelis changes some of the images on the cards but I think that his changes add to the cards instead of take away from them. If you are a fan of the Waite Smith Deck then this deck is for you.

Note: the gold foil is a nice addition. On some of the minors it looks like it is coming off. This is intentional so the cards take on a more antiqued look over time and with use.

Amazingly Bright! 24 mars 2014

I was pleasantly surprised I did not realize how much gold was actually on the cards they are beautiful I'm addicted. As others have said the pentacle suit is not fully covered in gold but it is supposed to be that way you can tell by the way each pent has the same amount of gold on each. This is a must have for collectors!

Great deck for personal use. Brilliant! 20 septembre 2014

With much reading of all reviews written thus far and with the myriads of tarot decks available, personally I have to say that for a deck that equals the resonance of the RWS deck, this is truly a remarkable work maintaining originality. For some it may be too gaudy, for others flawed either deliberately or due to poor printing, but for me I am awestruck. I waited patiently for weeks to for the deck to deliver not expecting too much. But wow! Again personally this deck blew my mind as well as my spirit.
The cards:
Standard tarot deck size; taller than a playing card deck but the same width.
The back is a soft gold leafy pattern resting on a solid black background. Not flashy as on the gold leaf card faces. Nice.
The face of each card is thinly boardered on the sides with a medium sized top and bottom margin surrounded in black with golden leaf designs at the corners as well as the centered numbers. This adds a nice contrast.
The Major and Minor Arcana do not identify the card, such as The Fool, The Hermit, etc. Which I think is nice because I am not distracted by naturally glancing at what is written and am more drawn into the card's features for interpretation.
The cardstock is solid and not flimsy and holds up well during shuffling and handling.
The artwork:
Golden printed decks of any tarot add new and fresh insight. The gold adds a nice accent to the already great artwork on each card.
I had originally ordered the deck as a collector's deck, for the aforementioned 'flaws' of the first printing. But these minor, and I repeat minor flaws give this deck its own personality...not just another tarot deck.
I tried to not open, but lost that battle and I am so glad I did. I am so thrilled with this deck that I have ordered a second to keep in its original upopened packaging! C'mon, it's only twenty bucks!
I recommed this deck to even an advanced beginner that knows the Major and Minor Arcanas and for those that enjoy the main look of the RWS deck.
I also recomend using this deck for just personal use or with close friend or family. Otherwise, the brilliance may be to distracting or overwhelming for clients' eyes.

Ooooo Shiny!!! 8 août 2014

Such a beautiful deck! The gold foil on the cards really shine, so it's a bonus for those who like the shiny. The card stock is good and easy to shuffle. It's not as sturdy as some of the other Lo Scarabeo decks, so I wonder if it's due to the gold foil? It's a very minor issue to me. In any case, I feel the deck definitely rates 5 stars.

While the deck is very similar to Rider Waite, the artist rendering helps me to look at each card differently. The color differences are pleasing to my eye as well.
