A must have for fans of the genre...Table of Contents included 24 octobre 2013

I had to order this through Amazon UK, because it's not available here (at least not yet). The price will be about $30, depending on the exchange rate. The shipping is where my wallet really took a hit; I paid extra for the quickest option. All together, I paid $63 for this book, and in my opinion it was worth every penny. (EDIT, Nov. 24: I see that there is now a new copy listed here on Amazon, for $17.59. Damn! I'm still glad I bought mine, but it would've been nice to buy it for almost $40 cheaper. Oh, well.) This is a magnificent paperback, with excellent typesetting, well bound and printed on quality glossy paper. Along with the well-reproduced movie stills, posters, and artwork, you'll receive an interesting education. What exactly is Gothic? What is its history and influence on literature and film? What are the elements that make a piece Gothic? You'll get answers to these questions in an easily read format. The essays are entertaining and informative, and many of the films that were mentioned I'd never heard of before. This is a companion volume for the British Film Institute's festival of the same name, which is taking place at this very moment (Aug 2013-Jan 2014). I'll let the book speak for itself. This is from the back cover:

'Gothic-The Dark Heart of Film' explores the shadowy world of Gothic cinema and television-a haunted place stalked by vampires and werewolves, ghosts and tormented monsters, mad scientists and the living dead, brooding Princes of Darkness and imperiled heroines...Through a range of lavishly illustrated new essays, written by some of the foremost authorities in the field, 'Gothic-The Dark Heart of Film' reveals how the archetypes of Gothic horror and romance have endured, reflecting our deepest fears back at us. It charts the story of how the Gothic found its dark heart in Britain, and came to life on film across the world, from its origins in the silent era, through the Universal horrors of the 1930s, the rise of Hammer in the 1950s, and many other twilight stops on its path to the present.
