Présentation de l'éditeur

English Teacher X is back again, to apply his numerous years of hard-won experience (as well as his vicious cynicism and disturbed sense of humor) to one of the thorniest topics in the world of Teaching English as a Foreign Language:

GRAMMAR.

Grammar rules are of small help in learning to use a foreign language, but they are of great use in quieting anxious or know-it-all students who constantly challenge the teacher, as well as impressing bosses and managers and succeeding in job interviews for TEFL positions.

English Teacher X provides a thorough look at some of the most common grammar points which come up in TEFL classes, and gives clear and detailed explanations of them, in addition to dialogues explicitly showing how to present and practice the information in class.

Topics examined include:

- All the terms you need to know

- Verb tenses

- Stuff students will try to test you with

- How to practice all this stuff

And many more!

WARNING! The book is filled with heaping helpings of English Teacher X's usual sarcasm, obscene language, and crude humor, as well as his notoriously nihilistic outlook on the profession of TEFL. Please don't buy it if that kind of thing offends you.

Biographie de l'auteur

English Teacher X has more than 15 years experience working at some of the worst EFL schools in the world. He is the author of several guides and memoirs on the subject of working and living abroad.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Useful and hilarious but hampered by some irritating formatting. 4 novembre 2013

While I'm not so wild about English Teacher X's tales about his drunken exploits, I have found that those said drunken exploits have given his more informational books a refreshing dose of reality. His Guide to Teaching English Abroad, Surviving Abroad and Speaking Activities That Don't Suck are frequently read and re-read on my Kindle for a variety of nostalgia, laughs and solid advice on what to actually do in the classroom that all too many wishy-washy guides cheerfully ignore.

Grammar Slammer is no different. It's narrative format is a little distracting at first when I would rather just have the grammar forms explained in a more mathematical way, but what makes it special is that ETX includes in these little narratives actual questions that students might use to ask to trip you up. To anyone who has stood in an actual classroom, it'll feel authentic and useful in showing how to coach students to teach themselves and check their own mistakes.

If there is somewhere the book falls short is that the organization leaves something to be desired. Where the other books in the series have had a variety of hilarious comics and the formatting was a little tighter, here it's a little more loosey-goosey. Still useful but hard to find my way when I want to brush up on some minor point he devotes less than a page to that is crammed between explanations of two or three other points that are themselves crammed within hypothetical classroom banter.

Nonetheless, I have made this one of my strongest recommendations to my friends getting in the EFL game and they too have reported back that it is a great resource. A purchase that you will not regret.

An outstanding, no frills overview of common grammar issues when TEFL'ing. It's also funny in a dark way. Like, real dark. I felt the need to put chemicals in my blood stream after reading this. But if you are an English teacher, you probably already do that anyway.

Grammar Slammer has been written in much the same style as previous Teacher X publications so there won't be any surprises for readers familiar with his books. While I am not keen on his examples the explanations and strategies are simple and useful and I like the fact that students are encouraged to experiment with grammar and are not reliant on worksheets.

Mr. X has a straightforward style. He wastes no time with discussing theory. Everything in here can be worked into the next class with little to no preparation. If there's one complaint I can make, it's that his lowbrow sense of humor jars with his thoughtful mini-lessons. That said, I don't mind his jokes--not at all. Maybe the jokes are there to remind us that although teaching's a sophisticated undertaking, we should remember to have a laugh. Anyone interested in looking for a way to teach grammar to English Language Learners will find this book useful. And hey, it's inexpensive.

ETX’s most recent book, Grammar Slammer is a self-explanatory guide to grammar, aimed squarely at those teaching English abroad. While it’d be easy to compare it to his previous teaching book, Speaking Activities That Don’t Suck, Grammar Slammer is considerably more involved than that book due to the bizarre, conflicting and strange (at least from an outsider’s perspective) rules of English grammar. I majored in English in college and even I didn’t know much of this stuff.

ETX explains just about every aspect of English grammar you could think of and a few that never would have occurred to me, such as the present perfect continuous and all sorts of other strange stuff. Per usual, Grammar Slammer is seasoned with his bleak, dark humor, which makes the bitter medicine he’s serving go down that much easier.

I wouldn’t exactly call Grammar Slammer a must-buy, but unlike Speaking Activities That Don’t Suck, it’s worth a look even if you have no interest in teaching English. It’s a surprisingly informative book with applications outside of teaching English abroad. I liked it as it helped me better understand how the English language works.
