Excellent addition to the Burgundy geek's library; not for the novice 28 juin 2014

This is a good book, well-written and packed with information, not to mention the lovely photographs. It is, however, very narrow in its scope, and so probably only of interest to someone who already knows quite a bit about wine in general and Burgundy in particular. As the title implies and the Amazon description confirms, this book focuses almost exclusively on the grand cru vineyards of Burgundy - the thirty or so vineyards ranked highest by French law, which represent less than 1% of Burgundy production and sell for $100 up to thousands a bottle. So if you're not a high roller, or a compulsive wine geek, you probably don't want this book.

Its specialization is not, however, why I give it only four stars out of five.

The theme of the book is the importance of terrior in determining the character and quality of wines, using the grand crus (and a handful of 1er crus) as examples. And, at least in this telling, terrior to Norman seems to be about geology to a remarkable degree, to the diminution of other aspects of terrior such as altitude, exposure, slope, orientation, and drainage (to be fair, he mentions these, he just doesn't seem to care a lot about them.) While he makes an interesting argument, it does not amount to a compelling one, and following this logic leads him to some interesting, yet unconvincing conclusions (such as the idea that Gevrey Les Combottes deserves promotion to grand cru). So I deduct one star for idiosyncracy.

Excellent perspective on the greatest vineyards of the world. The inclusion of the underclassified vineyards (like Clos St. Jacques and Les St. George) provides important and hard to find information about these hidden gems. A must for any Côte d'Or collector!

Loved this book. The author knows the wines, the vineyards, the history, and yet manages to present the information with warmth and not a hint of snootiness! I raise my glass in appreciation!

We had just returned from Burgundy and had visited many of the places pictured. It is great as a trip memory, but also very informative. The book helps us understand much more about the wine, the country, everything. We are fascinated by it all.
