Présentation de l'éditeur

"‘Delicious.’ I licked my lips. The wine filled me with joy. A picture of a vineyard drenched in sunlight formed in my mind. Sean drew me rudely back to the lounge of our semi-d.

'How can they be in liquidation if they make wine this good?’"

When Caro and Sean find the perfect ten-hectare vineyard in Saussignac, it seems their dreams of becoming wine-makers in the south of France are about to come true. But they arrive in France with their young family (a toddler and a newborn) to be faced with a dilapidated eighteenth-century farmhouse and an enterprise that may never, ever make them a living.

Undeterred by mouse infestations, a leaking roof, treacherous hordes of insects, visits from the local farm ‘police’ and a nasty accident with an agricultural trimmer, Caro and Sean set about transforming their ‘beyond eccentric’ winery into a successful business as they embark on the biggest adventure of their lives – learning to make wine from the roots up.

A real honest account of an adventure courageously grasped and lived through to the bone while remaining absolutely loyal to core values of an organic lifestyle through thick and thin with a lot of self sacrifice. Well written, entertaining, informative. One can only wish that this committed family meets well deserved success one day....

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Perseverance, Pain & Pleasure in Saussignac! 16 décembre 2013
Par Preston Camp - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
A couple of years back, my wife Catherine and I and good friends Mark & Barbara rented a house for a month at Thenac, not far from Caro & SF's place. We fell in love with the area and when Caro's book was recommended as a great read by my sister-in-law, I got it straight away. Once into it, I couldn't stop reading as it brought back so many memories. Not just that but feeling the pain and suffering of the Feelys through buying a wreck of a place and persevering where others would have given up, kept me enthralled. It is uncommon for an author of this type of book to be so frank and honest, and have the guts to tell it as it really happened, warts & all - particularly of the personal and intimate aspects of a relationship . The mostly, underlying positivism in the writing, the 'never say die' approach to solving one problem after another, makes it all the more enthralling - so too the discovery of things unknown and their unconcealment - sometimes with huge pleasure (the well) and at other times with dismay (French bureaucratic intransigence.) Yes, a great read,- for wine lovers, dreamers, Francophiles and others.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A memoir that is honest and full of passion and enthusiasm 1 octobre 2014

If I said `Chateau Haut Garrigue', I bet the first thing that comes to mind is French wine? How often have we all sat down of an evening on holiday, looking out over the beautiful French countryside, drinking a bottle of fruity, spicy French wine and wondered how lovely it would be to live in France, have a view like this everyday and maybe make our own wine? Grape Expectations is the book that tells the story of Caro, Sean and their two young daughters who do just that.

Caro writes honestly about their experiences moving from Ireland to the Bergerac region of France to run an organic vineyard, and her passion and enthusiasm shine through. Living and making a living in France is no holiday and running an organic vineyard is about as far removed from a holiday as you can get. Nothing can quite prepare you for the bureaucracy of setting up a business in France (been there done that), so hats off to the Feely's for attempting it with the added regulations involved in organic wine production. There were times when their future seemed uncertain, but what came across in the book is that they always gave it a bloody good go. Following your dreams can sometimes feel like a nightmare and there are always dark moments. For Sean and Caro these included a couple of nasty accidents that happened to Sean, you could say lots of blood, sweat and tears go into every bottle! The fact that they have been accepted into the local community and more importantly by the local vignerons, many of whose families have been making wine for generations, is a testament to their hard work and passion for organic wine making.

I'm in awe she found the time to write the book and feel very privileged to have been let into their life in France. Time must have been so pressured with two very young daughters to settle into a new life, the day to day running of the vineyard and developing the wine tourism side of the business. She seems to be good at multi tasking as they have just won the prestigious `Best of Wine Tourism 2013' Gold award for sustainable tourism. Caro's writing style is excellent and her descriptions of the wine flavours brought the words to life so I'm sure the vineyard courses she runs will be delivered in a very engaging way.

This book is published by Summersdale who sent me a copy to review.

Just finished your book - inspirational, heartwarming and a pure joy for this francophile. (I confess to a few tears).
I'm inspired to "go organic" and am looking forward to visiting as soon as possible.
Sincere thanks,

Thank you for this book!! It's long been on my bucket list to work in or at least visit a small organic vineyard, preferably in Europe (I'm from USA). I'm a gardener by trade &, of course, my season is the same as the vineyards. However, after this book literally jumped off the shelf at me, I've decided that, not only do I have to visit Terroir Feely Vineyard, but I so look forward to meeting the author & her family, even tho, due to Caro's style writing, I feel like I already know them & even the vines! I loved how honest the book is portraying all aspects of making a move like that to follow ones' dreams--the ups & downs, ins & outs, crazy their commitment to it all! For me as a gardener I learned so much about organic biodynamic growing, tending the vines & also the standard to which the government in France makes growers adhere to to be able to bottle & sell their wine--not easy but impressive. Looking forward to the second book which I just bought also!
