Graphics and Animation on iOS is another book devoted to iOS written by Vandad Nahavandipoor. He has also written iOS 4 Programming Cookbook. Graphics and Animation on iOS seems to be a supplement for iOS 4 Programming Cookbook. You can find here topics that are not covered in previous book. These topics touch the issues related to graphics manipulation within iPhone applications. Even though the book is not a typical Cookbook, it has similar style.

Book itself is rather thin. It covers just few topics. You will find here basics that most of programmers face sooner or later and it is addressed to people who start their experience with iOS development. That means, issues explained within the book are not very sophisticated. You will find here answers to commonly asked questions like: how do I draw something on the screen, how do I draw a text, how can I scale the image (shape), how can I rotate the image (shape), etc.

Graphics and Animation on iOS is a typical 'learn by example' tutorial. Examples are very simple and supporting code makes running them as simple as copy-paste. One remark here. Copying examples from book into XCode doesn't preserve formatting which means you have to manually reformat code within IDE. In fact, you mostly work with _single_ UIView method ' drawRect throughout the book. Everything happens inside it. This is really nice.

Book has two drawbacks. First of all, title implies that both graphics and animation will be covered in, let's say, equal proportion. This is not quite true. Animation related topics are like 10% of the whole book. Another issue is that I miss clipping related section ' this is usually an issue when it comes to graphics related development.

In overall I think this book is really devoted to iOS beginners. On the other hand you can always use it as a handy snippets base with detailed explanation. What is really nice here is that code examples are really small and functional.

The title of the book should be "Move and Draw Basic Shapes on iOS" 23 décembre 2011

If you think paying $8 for a book is cheap. Wrong! This book is a one chapter book. I am an iOS developer. I bought this book thinking it is a book that teaches graphics and animation and because it is from O'Reilly. I was shock all of my expectation is off - (1)It provides so little content that you can find them online easily and (2)it misses some of the very basic and important tip about animation. It is basically a "One chapter book." You will learn very little about animation. You will learn how to draw lines and basic shapes and move it across the screen. As an iOS developer, the simplest and most bang of the buck trick is to animate through a series of images to show a walking dog, spinning wheel etc; but guess what, this book never mentions it. Instead it will show you how to move an object across the screen + rotating the object with an angle.

I read this book in about 45 minutes and i am not much smarter than before. A few code snippets that I could have gogled somewhere and almost no additional background... I guess it's my fault. I saw he name O'Reilly and expected a minimum amount of quality. I should have noticed the small amount of pages. This is more or less a better blog post.

Good solid Graphics Background but not enough meat in CoreAnimation 4 mai 2011
Par Doron Katz - Publié sur
Format: Broché
A subset topic in Objective-C/Cocoa, Graphics and Animation guides the reader on one of the most daunting subjects for a beginner, CoreAnimation, Core Graphics and UIKit Drawing.

Vandad Nahavandipoor dedicates his book to the UI aspect, focusing on parts which are just touched upon in the more general iOS books, such as working with UIFonts, Gradient Drawing, as well as the more complex 3D Transformation and moving of objects along paths.

While you can get the general concepts from a more general O'Reilly book, I think focusing a book on this topic allows the reader, including myself, to devote enough attention rather than just skimming a chapter, by providing an entire book, although I must be a bit disappointed with the amount of animation versus the time the author spends on graphics. But on the other hand, I should probably take a CoreAnimation book, which should be a book in itself, so it's probably appropriate to focus on the Graphics aspect and this book is ideal for novice iOS developers.

I would recommend this book as part of a suite of books that are essential, without the illusion that this book will cover all you need with animation, but sufficient depth in Graphics/UIKit to give you a good solid background. I rate this book four out of five.

no longer useful with ios7 & current Xcode 25 juin 2014

another review says "The title of the book should be "Move and Draw Basic Shapes on iOS", and i thought 'wow that's exactly what i want to do!', but unfortunately the disparagement between the version of xcode covered in this book, and the current version (5.1.1) very quickly becomes a problem..

the first example, setting up the workspace, leaves you to figure a couple things out yourself, translating the books outdated pictures into what you're looking at with a newer major version of xcode, and by the 3rd example, drawing a simple string of text, the syntax checker is warning a depreciated somethingerrather and fails to run.

this book is outdated and unfortunately no longer useful.

It is a well written easy to follow beginners guide. Not actually what I was looking for! Could go further but didn't.
