Présentation de l'éditeur

1402 A.D. – Eighteen years ago, Sir Richmond le Bec, a knight in the service of Henry of Bolingbroke, was tasked with a mission of great importance. Young Henry had an affair with a married woman who bore him a child, and the woman’s husband vowed to kill both his wife and the child she birthed. Richmond was charged with taking the baby to safety and acting as her protector. Even though Richmond has risen to become Henry’s greatest knight, the protection of his illegitimate daughter has been his most important task. For eighteen years he has watched over the girl, ensuring her health and safety, as she is raised by another family, unaware of her true identity.

The Lady Arissa de Lohr has always loved Sir Richmond, the man who she believes is only a family friend. The powerful, handsome knight has always been in her heart and on the day of her eighteenth birthday, she can no longer keep her feelings to herself. Although she has been pledged to Whitby Abbey since infancy and knows that, upon reaching maturity, she will be delivered to the abbey as a novice nun, she has no desire to be sequestered away from Richmond. She loves the man, and she will have him.

Richmond, too, is deeply in love with the young lady he was assigned to protect. As she became a woman, his feelings turned from friendly concern to romantic admirer. Confessing their feelings to each other is only the beginning of their adventure, for dark forces are at work against both Arissa and Richmond, threatening to tear the lovers apart.

King Henry goes to battle against Owen Glendower, who has been made aware of the king’s secret illegitimate daughter and seeks to claim the girl to use against her father. Richmond is caught in the middle, protecting Arissa from the Welsh Rebels even as he fights Henry to keep her from being committing to Whitby.

Intrigue, battles, life, death and love blend in the greatest story yet of true love and the lengths Richmond will go to in order to have his beloved Arissa. He is more than willing to risk his life for the her in this epic tale of ultimate romance.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Romance that will leave you breathless! 29 août 2012

I haven't read anything by this author, so when I saw this story was a kindle freebie, and the cover intrigued me, I snagged it and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm so glad I did because this was a real treat! I love historicals plus "forbidden" romance and Great Protector has both. I thought the love story between Richmond and the Lady Arissa was so sweet and I rooted for them to overcome their obstacle so they could be together the way they wanted. The author does a great job of keeping the tension up and just when the characters overcome one obstacle, another sprouts up. Even up to the very end, I was on the edge of my seat, hoping for a happy ending and not sure it would happen. Great suspense, fabulous, swoon-worthy romance, likeable characters, and interesting historical elements all combine to make Great Protector an unforgettable read. I know it's one I'll come back to because I'm already missing Richmond and Arissa! The only thing that slightly "vexed" me was the lack of an epilogue-because the ending felt a bit abrupt and I honestly wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet! But that minor quibble aside, excellent reading!

This is another one of Kathryn Le Veque's wonderful medieval stories, filled with great character development, unselfish love, sacrifice and great characters. I think that the best thing that stood out in this book was strong, unexpected love in the face of great adversity, including a large gap in age differences. While I thought that the main heroine- Arissa - was a bit immature at times, I just attributed it to her young, tender age of 18. She, though, seemed to have a good show of decent judgement at times, in spite of her sheltered, cloistered life. Most kids at that age do not fully gain maturity, as we all well know, until later on in life. A major plus, in my opinion, was the other main character - Richmond - which is your typical strong alpha, likeable, sexy and respectable hero who is also surrounded by equally likeable and attractive fellow knights. All in all, this book was an enjoyable read. I'll be adding more of Kathryn Le Veque's books to my inventory in the near future - you just never know what you'll find and this one - The Great Protector - turned out to be a hidden gem.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good solid read with just a couple exceptions.... 4 septembre 2012

This is a great, fast paced romance with a lot of action. The scenes are well described and the characters are endearing. I see a second book with a few sub characters which I believe I'd enjoy. The plot is original and interesting. There is a lot of time the characters spend apart but the the story grabs you and keeps you interested in the outcome. My biggest qualms with the book were A. a TON of typos. This book could have been easily edited but instead had typos on pretty much every page. If you can read past them the book is worth it. B. the ending wasn't the best. I think it should be rewritten. It's not that it's bad, but it's very blag. When you read this many pages a greatly worded ending is like dessert at the end of the meal. I really felt the ending lacked passion.

This book had everything that I look for in a historical romance. I fell in love with the characters and the story. If historical romance is your genre you will love this book. I would highly recommend it.

This author is a rather recent find for me, and I've purchased a couple of her novels just based on the description. "The Protector" drew me in from the beginning, with Richmond, a favored knight of King Henry, being ordered to take the King's bastard infant daughter away and be her protector for life. As the girl, Arissa, matures, Richmond comes to love her in a less-than-fatherly fashion and she returns that love as an eighteen year old woman. Of course, there are obstacles (Aren't there always?): His station and her lack of one, then HER disclosed status as a princess, then the Welsh rebels attempting to use her as a pawn, and a lustful admirer whose advances towards Arissa are not returned...and on, and on, and on.

I get it! Things are tough! But as they overcome one hurdle after another, there never seems to be a resting point for the characters to evolve together. There's not really a ton of action, either, it's just a sort of stalemate that drags throughout the story. As for the characters, I liked the fact that Richmond was an older knight and that he was so courtly. However, it seemed a bit too much and a little patronizing. He was constantly calling Arissa "Kitten", which drove me batty, and asking her at various points in the story if she understood what was going on. In Richmond's defense, Arissa's character was a tad immature. In historical context, it's my understanding that at that age, most girls were married off and had children, so her frequent boughts of sobbing, clinging, and crying seemed a bit overdone. And you also can't go a paragraph without being reminded of her spellbinding beauty. Again, I get it.

And if you like epilogues, this book is NOT for you. It ended so suddenly that I kept tapping the screen of my Kindle to turn the page, thinking there simply MUST be more. But, nope, after all the time I invested reading the darn thing, no epilogue. Sigh.

In short, I got pulled in by the premise, enjoyed the time period and setting, and felt a connection to the characters, even if I didn't like them the entire time, but felt the relationship wasn't as much a focus as it could've been and the whole thing ended too suddenly. I will try the other novels I purchased from this author to see if this book is one in a pattern or an anomaly. I hope it's a blip, because I love romance novels from this time period!
