Présentation de l'éditeur

"This is a love story in three parts about how I ended up with much more than I bargained for, and grew beyond the person I thought I'd be."

Anna Hess spent her early childhood chasing ornery cows back into the barn, eating all of her family's strawberries before they got ripe so she didn't have to share them, and climbing sap-riddled pine trees. The reality of farm life seemed to be summed up in one word --- bliss. So when her back-to-the-lander parents threw in the towel and moved the family to a nearby town, Anna resolved to save her pennies and find a farm of her own, one that she would never have to leave.

A couple of decades later, Anna had bought the property, but soon realized she couldn't make her dreams come true alone. When a friend set her up with a potential mate, Anna went along grudgingly. "To be honest, at the time I was still pretty sure that a farm and a man were incompatible," Anna wrote, "and given the choice I leaned toward the farm." Little did she know that the best partnership was a threesome --- a man, a woman, and a farm.

Overflowing with photos, this book serves as a preface to the popular homesteading blog, Walden Effect.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Finally, the story behind the stories!! 27 octobre 2013

For those of you that have enjoyed all that Anna Hess has generously shared in her other fine books on Trailersteading and Weekend Homesteading and Permaculture Chickens and wanted to know more about this interesting young woman, now we have the story behind the story. Anna has given us glimpses before, but this is her interesting and amusing story in long form. My only word of advice: stop reading the reviews and buy the book so you can dive right in and start enjoying a great story about a modern day pioneer.

Note to author: Love the cover picture!

Maybe it's because Anna Hess' and our childhoods and childhood ambitions were so similar, or maybe it's because both of our primary life goals haven't changed all that much since age nine, but Hess' new e-book resonated strongly with us. Her easygoing and open writing style make the book a quick read (we've read several of her books, and finished each in a single session), and for folks like us, for whom homesteading is still a work in progress, it's inspiring to read about the journey of someone who has made it for real. And although Hess mentioned that this book is one of her more 'fluffy' productions, there is plenty of practical advice for attentive readers.

The book takes an autobiographical tour of Hess' life nearly up to the beginning of her full-time homesteading career. (More details of the interim between then and now are given in her other books.) For aspiring homesteaders (especially those seeking a secluded and rural property on a budget), Hess' life lessons are an invaluable treasure. Some of the most pertinent tidbits we gleaned from the book are:

*Factors to look for when selecting a tract of land.
*How to screen partners/mates to make sure they are on board with your homesteading goals.
*There will be setbacks, so stay flexible and positive!
*Don't wait until you move to learn the skills you'll need.
*How to pester utility companies so they will connect your service.

In all, a book worth considerably more than the price of admission, and another great addition to Hess' already great series of homesteading e-books. Definitely recommend it.

Anna Hess has put down the story on how her and her Husband got started on a Homestead. They started with 58 acres and not much money.
Anna is a great story teller and has figured out how to raise a garden, raise Chickens (both for Eggs and Meat!) and she tells it just like you are sitting in the same room with her!
Well written and full of "How to" and "How not to"! Stewardship of the land, Animals and resources that make up her "Homestead"
If you live in the country or the city and want to start a garden, or have a few Chickens, She tells you how to go about it.
A great read for the "Back to the land" People!

This book increased my desire to get a farm and further question my ability to live on less than I do now.
