Gu are well known as a brand of exquisitely well made desserts of sophistication, using quality ingredients, with unknown additives kept to a minimum. Although they have a range which are a cacao free zone (Fru) they are specifically known as THE chocolate lovers bought dessert heaven. At least they are in this house. No other bought pud will do. If its a pud, it has to be Gu

So.............these irresistible choccy pudding people, chocolate fanatics, have produced a cookbook using their (and my) favourite sweet ingredient. And some.

They share some of their secrets. Recipes range from the quickly whipped up (chocolate madeleines, I eagerly thought) to the sort of chocolate table centrepiece that might leave your friends, family and other dinner party guests gazing at you with mouth dribbling adoration - or at least, gazing at your chocolate dish that way, as you astound them with your perfectly sensational Chocolate, cardamom and clementine marbled roulade decorated with CHOCOLATE (EDIBLE) BUBBLE WRAP.

And why stop there. For the chocolate extremists (and meat and fish eaters, I went a little pale here) Monkfish with chocolate, Chicken baked in a cocoa crust, pigs, fluffy bunnykins and deer given the chocolate enrobing treatment.

No, no I want to think no more about this, and will return to kinder, more playful excursions such as chocolate lollipops and chocolate martini.

Suffice it to say, however you prefer to ingest your Theobroma cacao, you will find plenty of ideas to send you to creative culinary heaven.

The usual sumptious photographs we have all come to desire from cookery books are well in evidence, and I suggest wearing a little dribble cup as you indulge in the kitchen equivalent of a soft-porn read!

What particularly gets my chocolatey thumbs up to those nice people at Gu, is that they helpfully include a chapter at the start of the book that without being in any way patronising takes you through the basics of such things as baking blind, how to prepare cake tins, make custards, the quality of ingredients (for example, why milk means full cream), the kitchen tools you will need - I think this is a book which both novice and experienced cooks will confidently, and stickily, self-indulgently use. Mmmm

Dentists and those running weight loss programmes will also have cause to bless the publication of this books as their customer base rises unstoppably.

Oh........and as for those madeleines. I made them - and then noticed as I was about to pop them in the oven - BLAST - the mixture needed to cool in the fridge, preferably overnight, and certainly for at least an hour as the rise would be due to the contrast between the cold mixture and the hot oven. That will teach me to read through a recipe from start to finish before beginning. Heaven was delayed while I went out and did other things to avoid surrendering to eating the delicious mix raw from the bowl.

Patience eventually rewarded, madeleines appeared angelically, and were Guuuuuud!

And 2 notes - firstly I received this as a free review copy
Secondly, to my delight (I am from across the pond) measurements were European metric. We have never been fans of the American cups, and don't understand it - so get your scales, rather than your cups, ready before entering the kitchen!

This is THE quintessential chocolate cook book of around 100 recipes. The exquisite photos alone really do entice the reader into wanting to try the recipes. All the usual suspects - cookies, brownies, mousse, muffins, eclairs appear, together with a wonderful selection of outside the chocolate box recipes including chocolate chicken and chocolate bubble wrap. The tips, shortcuts and advice really do help in mastering essential techniques such as tempering chocolate. If you treat yourself to one cook book on the subject of chocolate, make sure it is this one. I am an avid cook book collector and have more than 200 from around the world, on every conceivable culinary subject - this one definitely ranks in my top ten and is my number one of the moment.

I just received the GU book and I did not try any of its recipes yet. I received this book along with Couture Chocolate, which is an outstanding chocolate master class! I guess I will feel more comfortable with GU's book, because it is more down to earth. More in accordance with my baking skills. It looks more accessible to normal human beings that strive in their home kitchens to present something new and original to their families. Anyway, it is a very beautiful book with great pictures and hot/sexy new ideas on how to use chocolate and delight your family!
