Présentation de l'éditeur

On the surface, rock star Jordan Kane has it all. His band No Rules is burning up the charts and headlining a world tour. His bodyguard doubles as a hot, kinky boyfriend who knows just how to push all his buttons. But behind the scenes, he’s suffocating.

Jase Hewitt never imagined he’d have a shot at bedding the larger than life rock star - never mind dominating him - but now he’s worried he’s in over his head. Jordan’s kinks run deep, dark, and sometimes dangerous, putting Jase’s desires to both pleasure and protect him at odds.

They might have a fighting chance at finding the safe, happy medium between what Jordan needs and what Jase is willing to give, but there’s one problem: Daniel, Jordan’s childhood best friend, the band’s talented guitarist — and a volatile, hard-partying drug addict. Jordan is determined to save Daniel from himself, but Jase has been there, done that, and desperately wants to protect Jordan from the inevitable heartache of watching an addict self-destruct.

When Daniel goes off the rails again, Jordan calls off the tour to get him help. Tension within the band skyrockets and pressure from the record label sends Jordan into a dark spiral. Now his band — and his life — are balanced on a knife's edge, and Jase is the only one who can pull him back... but only if the echoes of his own tragic past don't push him over first.

Biographie de l'auteur

Cat Grant lives by the sea in beautiful Monterey, California, with one persnickety feline and way too many books and DVDs. When she’s not writing, you can usually find her watching movies or TV (Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries are among her favorite shows), singing along to her favorite band (30 Seconds to Mars), or fantasizing about kinky sex with Michael Fassbender and/or Jared Leto. L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great story 6 avril 2014

I like stories about rock stars so I was intrigued when I read this book summary. Jordan is a rock star who is the lead singer and writer for the group, No Rules. Jase is a guitarist who takes an assignment as Jordan's personal bodyguard when his previous band breaks up. The attraction between the two of them happens quickly although they both realize there can be complications from an employer/employee personal relationship. They share a kinky side - pain but Jordan ups the ante by also needing to be choked by his partner during sex to the point he passes out. This level of BDSM was disturbing for me but the story was interesting enough that I wanted to see how their story progressed. The story is told from both of their points of view.

They share the pain and frustration of watching someone they love destroy themselves through drugs and alcohol - Jase's ex-boyfriend (Eric) and Jordan's best friend, ex-lover, and lead guitarist (Daniel). Jase struggles with his role of protector (DOM and bodyguard) and meeting his and Jordan's need to give and receive pain. Jordan is struggling to try to save Daniel, keep his band going, and keep his record label off their backs about continuing their successful tour despite Daniel's relapses. He finds some relief from the pressures of his life by being Jase's submissive but the reality of not being able to save someone who doesn't want to save themselves almost destroys Jordan and their relationship. I experienced a range of motions (empathy for their pain in trying to save a loved one, discomfort regarding their extreme BDSM pain style, and hoping they could figure out a way to be together).

I was conflicted between a four and five star rating and finally decided on five stars because this story kept my attention and eventually made me smile.

If I was to write my review before 50% it would have had a big old DNF. This was all over the place. The authors had not found a rhythm, the characters were confusing and frankly, not real likable, and I was bored to tears. What kept me going? The few BDSM scenes. No, they weren't particularly great scenes but I was angry enough at that point to see if they were able to pull a save out of their BDSM bag. They made the save, barely. I know it's probably just me but when you start messing around with trying to cure someone's emotional illnesses with BDSM, THEN I have to look at the whole book seriously and see if it rings true. This was NOT consistent. I normally don't give a rat's ass about whether things seems real. Fiction is fiction, right? Well, it is up until they cross that line with me. Then it better ring true. So, they barely pulled it out of the bag by making me at least want to see how this ended. I can't believe that both of these big time authors could not come up with a decent editor. The mistakes were what I would equate with a self-published book. I'll stop fussing now.

Guarded by Cat Grant and L.A. Witt is a hot, sexy and kinky romance that is full of deep emotions. This poignant novel is also a bit heartbreaking as Jordan Kane watches his longtime friend and band mate Daniel Barrett hit rock bottom then re-enter rehab. With his life slowly slipping out of control, Jordan eagerly submits to his dominant bodyguard and new lover Jase Hewitt. Will their newfound relationship withstand the stress of Daniel’s recovery and return to Jordan’s life?

Jordan loves performing and touring with his band No Rules, but he has become a bit jaded by his stardom. With little free time to cultivate a relationship, he has a reputation for sleeping with his road crew but these hookups are fairly short lived. His longest enduring relationship is with Daniel and their history is complicated by their own failed romance and Daniel’s longstanding battles with addictions.

In the beginning, Jase is charmingly unsure of himself when it comes to Jordan. He knows about Jordan’s secret kink and although he is hesitant to give Jordan what he needs, their first sexual encounter is explosive. Jase is quick to realize that Jordan is truly a submissive who thrives on pain. When Jordan begins to flounder while on break from touring, he and Jase fully engage in a BDSM relationship.

There is also a strong emotional connection between Jase and Jordan but Jordan’s loyalty to Daniel is a source of friction between them. Jase’s past experiences with an addict provide incredible insight into Daniel and Jordan’s troubled relationship but Jordan is too close to situation to recognize the truth to Jase’s astute observations. Jordan remains hopeful about Daniel’s future, but are his expectations realistic?

An excellent collaboration between Cat Grant and L.A. Witt, Guarded is gritty, compelling and intense but overall, there is very little angst. The plot is believable and beautifully executed. Jase and Jordan are superbly developed characters with well-detailed backstories that add depth the unfolding storyline. Their emotions and struggles feel real and their honesty with themselves and each other is refreshing. The sex scenes are exquisitely detailed and sizzling hot. Although the ending is little predictable, it is absolutely perfect.

I received a complimentary copy for review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another winner from LA Witt and Cat Grant. It's a tale featuring BDSM, but without the tropes that have made the genre so... 6 avril 2014

...popular-THANK GOODNESS!!!

Normally, a tale featuring BDSM is something that you'd have to plead with me/bribe me, to read, but the names Cat Grant and LA Witt made this tale something that I had to read, BDSM or not. It's a 5* Keeper of a read in every way, and it's only the second BDSM tale to actually start to convince me that aspects of BDSM can be healing and necessary to some people, rather than just hedonistic fun and kink.

The tale is about a rock band - more like a rock duo, really - that's hit the big time, but for the main guys, guitarist Daniel, and singer Jordan, the demands of being on the road, of relentless schedules and expectations have been taking their toll, and for Daniel, who's fallen into drink, drugs and stints in rehab, the writing was on the wall from the very beginning of the story. Despite his failings, and the spanners he threw into the romance between Jordan and Jase, an ex-band member himself, currently Jordan's bodyguard and lover, I couldn't help but like him and feel sorry for him that his demons had him in too strong a grip, one that he wasn't capable of dealing with or overcoming. His character was very well written, sometimes obnoxious, sometimes slyly, cleverly manipulative and yet at times child-like and needy, and the tale made me wish that Jordan and Jase had all of the answers so that they could have 'fixed' him.

As for Jordan's need of kink with his sex in order to to find a form of peace and quiet that meant he could relax, and not just crash for a few hours, well, it wasn't my cup of tea, but the way in which the authors approached his needs, and the way in which Jase was able to fulfill them whilst at the same time protecting Jordan, was very well done. I've probably gone off BDSM tales because I've read popular 'let's jump on the BDSM bandwagon and just repeat stuff that we think we know about, but are just copying from other tales and putting our own take on', which have been same-ish, utterly boring and contrived/sticking to a formula that includes 'word A', 'Act B', Dom type, Sub type, etc.stereotypes, but with this tale, there were proper conversations, there was understanding, there was a clear need that was met equally, and at no time did I see any evidence of what I tend to call 'jerk BDSM', where one person just has to be called, 'master' and the other to act like an utter ninny. I have to say that there was one instance of sharing at the start of Jase and Jordan's romance, which to me wasn't what I'd call love, perhaps more a touch of hedonism and perhaps the first instance where Jordan had the opportunity to experiment and find out about his needs and wants, but that was a one-off and didn't detract from the tale, and in fact, I think it helped cement a sincere friendship between certain participants. I'm happy to say that from that point onwards, the tale became an exclusive MM romance, one in which the leads - Jordan: damaged, at times a little immature, a lot needy, slightly selfish, and Jase: experienced, a bit jaded, a giver and protector, and a touch wary - came together, fulfilled something very sincere and mutual in each other.

It is a romance, but there's a proper tale around the sex (healing, not overly graphic, emotional, cathartic, but not as sexy and explicit as I'm used to in MM novels, which is not at all a complaint, as it suited both the tale and the leads), and there's a lot going on. It's not overly heavy, it's not preachy, but there are moments whereI kind of wanted Jordan to be tougher with his tough love stance, in the hopes that he might have gotten through to Daniel. It's clear that the authors have researched addiction and addicts, as Daniel had all of the characteristics, but underneath it all, I sensed a decent guy in a lot of pain that he couldn't see an end to, and who I liked and felt sorry for.

There are a few moments of sadness and the romance is tested on more than one level, and by more than one event or person, but it ends with an epilogue that takes place nearly a year after the 'it's all coming up roses' moment, showing readers that Jase and Jordan are going to last the distance, and with even more equality and understanding in their relationship.

It's a 5* Keeper of a tale, and had I not begged for and been given a copy of the book by LA Witt in return for an honest review, it's one that I would have willingly bought.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Edgy, Interesting M/M Romance 13 mai 2014

3.5 of 5 stars –
(I'm excited to have won this as a Goodreads First Read – so thanks, Cat!)

I had not read any of Grant or Witt’s works previously, and I enjoyed this introduction to them via a descriptive story mixing a rockstar/bodyguard romance with bdsm and addiction subplots.

There was decent character development of the two MCs (Jordan and Jase), but there could have been more for Daniel, which may have helped me care for him more <spoiler>***and be more emotionally involved for the loss when he commits suicide***</spoiler>. Perhaps more on his (as well as the two MC’s) past and psychological development would have added the needed depth to fully round out the characters. Other than that, this was fairly character-light, those three being really the only characters developed or talked about at all.

The story was told from the POVs of the two MCs in alternating chapters. It was a pretty strong storyline, realistic conflict, and somewhat steady pace throughout. I wasn’t sure at first, but I liked the rock setting, although it didn’t really get into it that much. It did get into addiction, and my having had some professional as well as personal experiences with it, this was a fairly realistic depiction of the disease, the physical/psychological/emotional aspects, its challenges, the enabling, and processes for recovery. But the main focus was a nice, all be it up-and-down m/m romance, loaded with strong attraction, some exciting moments, occasional doubts and insecurities, inevitable struggles, a push and pull overlayed with a rock setting and bdsm.

I appreciated how the bdsm (mainly focused on breath play and whipping) was dealt with. While I’m not experienced with gay bdsm, I am somewhat aware and it seemed to be a fairly realistic (but at times less so), and sexy, depiction of the dom/sub roles, needs and desires and the role of trust and care. While it usually fit, the sex seemed a bit too frequent at times (even for sex starved new lovers). The sex scenes were hot, yet could have been even hotter with a bit more erotic descriptions of what men feel.

Overall, an interesting look at a developing m/m romance laced with bdsm.
