Extrapolating a fantasy scenario that melds core beliefs from Christian theology with elements of magic, and infusing them into an action story, Lee Appleby crafts a tale that moves along at a steady pace. Characters are delineated and their motivations well defined. Surprising turns of events lend a sense of unpredictability. However, the author is less successful establishing a consistent sense of age for his main characters, especially Leone and Kate. As a result, some of the emotional and sexual content comes across as awkward, and occasionally silly. Nonetheless, it is easy enough to ignore these moments, as the primary storyline is strong enough to hold the reader.

As has been mentioned already, the book is rife with grammatical errors and incorrect spellings. The human mind is quite capable of reading around and through these kinds of errors, but they are not trivial. And this book is, by no means, alone in suffering from lack of conscientious editing by the author. (The rampant degradation of quality of self-published books should come as no surprise. Amazon and other self-publishing platforms are essentially vanity presses for authors who lack a "real" publisher that employs actual editors.) I suppose I find these issues less disturbing that some readers, but be aware that this book is not a polished product.

There is a dark and somewhat horrifying plot device involving human souls, which provide not only useful knowledge to those who can tap in and learn from them, but actual power. This disturbing aspect of the story is never resolved (or even addressed). It is taken for granted, as if morally neutral. And perhaps it is intended to be perceived that way. But it is never discussed in detail and becomes quite discomfiting along the way.

There will surely be a sequel. The book ends with a major success. Yet there are some unresolved questions. This is not great literature, but it is a pretty good story by an author who has the potential to develop into a solid teller of tales. If half-stars were possible, I'd give this one 3 1/2 stars.

Totally loved this. The story is intelligent, puzzling and original, following a small diverse group as they strive to unravel the mysteries set before them, raising plenty of questions about accepted faith and science and really makes you think about things, with many of the characters taking a wide variety of stances on complicated subjects. I often found myself a little unsure on who I agreed with.
Will be watching this space for more books, especially because there seems to be lots of room for a sequel and I have to know what happens after!
Definitely worth trying.

I enjoyed this book very much. It has all the stuff of our real world, with the fantasy story threaded throughout. The vivid descriptions and sense of place made reading a pleasure, and the storyline leaves one eager to see what is next.

I started this book interested in the story line. It makes for a difficult read when words are missing from sentences or different tenses of the same word both appear in the same sentence (couldn't they could have ...). I had to stop reading. I think the author was in a hurry to write down their thoughts before they fled, I also think that proof reading would have helped. Perhaps a modern journalist wrote this story, don't know but it lost interest because of the poor writing. I can see that it would be a story I would enjoy but since the author put the minimal amount of effort into their creation I feel it deserves the minimus of my attention.
