Présentation de l'éditeur

Learn the secrets to achieving your ultimate sound

Whether amateur or pro, guitarists live for the ultimate sound. Guitar Amps & Effects For Dummies provides the information and instruction you need to discover that sound and make it your own! Written in the characteristically easy-to-read Dummies style, this book is ideal for beginners and experienced musicians alike, and can help all players expand their skill set with effects. Guitarists tend to be gearheads when it comes to sound, and this book provides guidance on topics ranging from the guitar itself to amps, pedals, and other sound technology.

Amps and effects are the unsung heroes of guitar music. While most people recognize the more psychedelic effects, many don't realize that effects are often responsible for the unique quality of tone that can become a musician's trademark. Certain effects work on the volume or signal level, others work on the environment, and still others work on the bass and treble content. Guitar Amps & Effects For Dummies covers them all, and shows how effects can not only add something extra, but also "fix" problematic areas. Topics include:

  • Gain-based effects, like distortion, compression, volume pedals, and gates
  • Tone-based effects, including graphic and parametric EQ, and the wah-wah pedal
  • Modulation effects, like the flanger, phase shifter, and tremolo
  • Ambience effects, including reverb and delay

The journey to incredible guitar music never ends. No matter how experienced you are with a guitar, there is always room for improvement to your tone and sound. Whether you're looking for the sound of angels or thunder, Guitar Amps & Effects For Dummies will help you achieve the music you hear in your dreams.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Not a bad read, just not altogether what I was expecting 12 septembre 2015

Was hoping for more concrete information and details about how to create/manipulate tone. This book gave some interesting background and historical information but not much in the way of specific steps "How to recreate this tone", or "input these settings on equipment that meets these specs, to create these tones" or "these three pedals/amps connected in this fashion create this tone, while reordering them in this fashion changes it in this manner". And while I realize that "tone" is unique to each individual and each of the infinite variable in the environment, based on the title/introduction I was hoping for more specifics. Not a bad read, just not altogether what I was expecting.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 All the lowdown for the highly strung 13 octobre 2014
Par Mr. Richard Marris - Publié sur Amazon.com
In the past For Dummies has taught me about XML, HTML, SQL and Client Server architectures, among many other things (including Buddhism). All this (except perhaps the Buddhism) has earned me a fair bit of cash so it seemed a good idea to get a Dummies Book to help me spend it on upgrading my noise.

I’ve been playing guitar and writing songs for 33 years. As such, I consider myself a delicate and highly-strung artiste. Frankly, it’s not my job to worry about tubes and germanium transistors. The author obviously does worry about these things. He’s bought, soldered and cranked the life out of them. Now I can read a few well-written, concise paragraphs and do the same (apart from the soldering. I’m an artiste, remember).

And after all the techie stuff you get a really entertaining section on rigs, tones and the men who made them. Did you know Dick Dale wasn’t originally a reverb fan? Tremelo was the way to go for surf, in his opinion. His reverb phase came later; remember Misirlou? I listened to Let’s Go Trippin’ again; dry as a bone. Here’s a man who definitely knows his subject.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Admitting you are a guitar dummie is the first step to recovery 16 octobre 2014

First off lets just say this book covers EVERYTHING imaginable about getting the most out of your guitar and amp. As the author says in the forward, use the book as a guide for the specific question(s) you have or use it more as overall study of the entire guitar/amp/effects process. At a minimum read and digest Part 1. It gives you a very good overview and serves as a roadmap for the rest of the book. Some more advanced guitarists will find some of the material very basic but DUMMIES UNITE! This book is for the rest of us who still struggle to find consistent tones that we can reproduce consistently. Some bandmates probably cringe at the overuse of effects... Chapter 13 is a must read to help navigate the endless variety of effects and associated accessories.
I didn't buy this with the expectation of it being a one time read. Take some time with this book and keep it handy during practice sections or the next time you are planning a purchase.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Saved me from buying a new amp! 28 août 2014

Being a novice guitarist I found this book extremely useful. Very informative without being too technical. I was struggling with getting a good tone from my amp and I was able to jump right to chapters 9&10 to help me dial it in. Great read for anyone that is looking for help with getting the right tone. I'm a Gibson fan and really enjoyed one of Dave's other books, "The Gibson Les Paul: The Illustrated Story of the Guitar That Changed Rock".

I own so many guitar books, but this is the first one that puts useful and easy to follow information on all aspects of your guitar rig in one package.....whether you are brand new to the guitar, or been playing for awhile, you will want to keep this book near your guitars for quick reference..... Very pleased with this purchase......also check out the author's dedicated books on the telecaster, stratocaster, and Les Paul!
