5.0 étoiles sur 5 Good for Beginners through Intermediates 24 janvier 2013

I wanted to review this because all of the other reviews were from beginners. I consider myself somewhere between "Advanced Beginner" and "Low Intermediate" and wanted to give a review from there: would you learn anything if you already knew a bit about guitar and would it be a lot or a little?

I was very pleased with this book. First, I liked that the author, Mark Phillips, got right into the basics and saved all the part about how to choose a guitar for much later on. I think it's a very good book for beginners--shows what everything means, where it is, how to play single notes and chords, gives you songs to work on.

Beyond that, I liked that it covers a lot of different things--keys/chord families, how to read music, how to read tablature, and a variety of styles of strums and genres--a taste of classical, blues, jazz, rock, folk, fingerstyle, etc. This is excellent when you're beginning as you can see what type of guitar playing you really gravitate to--and it may not be only the kind of music you listen to. There are many examples and the directions for everything are very clear.

But what really sold me on this book is the DVD. It has 150 examples and they are VERY well demonstrated. I loved the way there were two images showing how to play at the same time--your left hand in one corner and your right hand, showing the fretting, down below. Perfect for "learning by doing". Even in a class, you rarely would get the chance to see the hand position/finger positions so close up and have a chance to study the techniques. Demonstrations of things like hammering on were so well done--so much different watching and imitating than just doing it from reading. Likewise "faking the blues"--didn't look like much on paper, but it looked and sounded very cool when you imitate the dvd. (Oh, to the person who gave it "1 star because the Kindle didn't have the dvd"--the Kindle will never have the dvd because Kindle can't embed video like this, but they do adjust the price because you're not getting the dvd. The advantage with a Kindle is you can keep it flat and read while you do it (although I liked the dvd so much I'd just get the book, personally).

Really liked this book. 5 stars.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good beginning "How to" book for basic guitar playing. 13 novembre 2012
Par Jess W. Dixon - Publié sur Amazon.com

I had played my Gibson Jumbo accoustic guitar for years and finally told myself I needed to. I'd forgotten most of the basic chords and seeing "Guitar for Dummies" advertise on Amazon I immediately ordered it. I am making what I would call slow progress. It took weeks to develop some callouses on my finger tips and move beyond the pain of those early practice sessions, and I have been practicing and memorizing the basic few beginning chords, taking a lot more time than it did when I was a much younger man.

So far I do enjoy the clear pictures, showing the finger placement, and the explanations they give, along with the humor sprinkled here and there, which is enjoyable. I'm not sure how far I'll be capable of following the book on to the more advanced chord positions, but for me, the book was worth it's good price. I would recommend this book for any beginner or old coot returning to re-learn the basics again, if just to relax and make some nice guitar sounds for my own pleasure. But the love of my life, tells me she is enjoying listening to me. So I must be doing something right so far. Go for it and enjoy!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The best guitar instruction book ever 31 janvier 2013
Par Gordon M. Wagner - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché|Commentaire client Vine pour produit gratuit (De quoi s'agit-il?)
Alas, I have zero musical talent. That has not deterred me from abusing a series of guitars over the years. That, coupled with a personal fascination for how-to books regardless of subject, finds me admiring this book and lamenting the fact that no amount of instruction seems to help me do more than plink away.

This is the rare "Dummies" book I have no qualms about: it's all muscle and no filler. From the expected introduction to the physical parts of the guitar through to various playing styles and explanations of tuning and making basic repair, EVERYTHING is included, lovingly explained and chock-full of side notes and inset boxes explaining all potential bumps in the road. The DVD is a great idea, especially for slow learners such as myself... sitting there perched on the edge of the couch with this book open, the TV on, the DVD remote control on my right knee, the guitar on my left knee, my cats trying to stifle a giggle as I try to replicate what I'm seeing on the screen... "When we make horrible noises, you spray us with the spray bottle" remind the cats. "That's DIFFERENT!" I insist, making further horrible screeching noises as my fat fingertips manage to land in the wrong places.

I love the guitar. I love this book. But don't expect miracles. Perhaps someday I'll learn how to play. But at least after a lifetime of playing guitar badly, I know a great guide when I see one, and this book is a great guide! 100% recommended!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for Beginners 20 novembre 2012

I knew I would need a lot of help to learn to play the guitar at my age. I figured Guitar for Dummies would probably fit that need and it did....now just to find the time to practice. I have learned the first 3 chords already and toughened my fingers now to gain my speed on changing between the chords. It is a lot of fun and I can go at my own pace.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An enjoyable entry into guitarland and Oh, the places you'll go! 3 février 2013

"Guitar for Dummies, 3rd edition," is the magical road that takes me places that other guitar books only dream. I had avoided this book because of its title, big mistake. So, while buying and following other good guitar instruction books my progress was not as direct and in-depth as that offered in this book. My problem with those books is that they would take you up to a point where you were feeling a breakthrough is coming. Then, there would be a gap between what you had just learned and the next subject in the book. I'd think, "what have I missed? Am I too dense to follow this stuff?" No it's just that the subjects did not flow evenly. I guess the writers had assumed that you would just "fill in" the connections.

This book gives instructions in small "bite-size" pieces with exercises immediately following to help imprint the material in your mind and the "muscle memory" of your hands and fingers. Following these are suggested songs to play later in the book that include items learned up to that point. Then, if you have the accompanying DVD you are given video examples of the lessons and jam tracks to play along with to further reinforce what you just learned! Pretty nice. The next subject flows seamlessly from what you have just learned so your progress is smoother. BTW the DVD/CD closely follows and is to be used with the book. It is very well done crisp, clear and really worth having.

In my guitar studies I was always searching for answers to questions that I guess were kind of off-the-wall. Questions that other books and even teachers wouldn't or couldn't answer but that my inquiring little mind just had to know. I lost time with some teachers and other instruction books that just didn't give me the whole picture. But, eventually I became good enough to perform in public at various venues and teach beginning guitar for the city recreational department.

Then, through Amazon's Vine program I was offered the chance to acquire and review this book. Amazon's description looked promising so I accepted. Great choice! For me this book was my "holy grail" it answered my "wierd" questions and helped me to move to the next levels of guitardom.

"Guitar for Dummies" will guide you too at a high level of self study and if you have a teacher (suggested), help you to get the very best from your lessons and keep them on track. Note: even if you have a teacher you are responsible for you own progress. This book will help you and your teacher to achieve your goals.

The multi-media approach of this book is an outstanding enhancement. Having said that, the real value is the book itself. Excellent to-the-point instruction, definitions, practice sections, songs, reviews of guitar styles and techniques and just good reading. I think you'll be happy with it. Have fun.
