Having read this book I find the complete white wash of 5 star reviews extremely dubious. For starters, the book took only twenty minutes to read. But now let’s get onto the content.

I’ll clear up a factual error the book makes about the Fartlek protocol. Fartlek did not suddenly “become” HIIT. Fartlek is still used as a distinct HIIT protocol.

The book contains a few dubious exercises that have no place in a HIIT regime. Pull-ups for example are only useful if you can do many, otherwise they are better suited to a strength training program.

The author talks about “Tabata sprints” as though that’s all you can do with Tabata. In fact the Tabata protocol enables you to do almost anything if you work intensely enough. Something the author does not clear up.

We are advised simply to “stretch.” But are never advised how or when. Should we do this before or after HIIT?

I agree with the author on bulking and cutting, but we are only given a very simplistic explanation. For example, “When you eat a lot of carbs, it affects your quality of sleep.” This statement isn’t even true. It continues, “When your sleep is affected, it is hard to build muscle and lose fat. When it is hard to build muscle or lose fat, you are sad.” – See what I mean?

We are then told to avoid eating too many carbs, which is again, very bad advice to give to an exerciser, especially to someone engaging in high intensity exercise such as HIIT. This all came from a very large section on bulking and cutting which, considering this book was mainly about HIIT, I took to be filler content.

On many occasions, the book makes sweeping statements such as “research discovered,” but goes into no detail about the research. There are also no references so if you’re needing an academic book for your studies, this won’t cut it.

In one chapter the book talks about HIIT and then suddenly changes topic to talk about the dangers of anabolic steroids – Why? Later he goes on to talk about Zumba for some reason.

The book repeats, literally twenty plus times, that HIIT builds lean muscle. While this may be true, during my own research I’ve actually found nothing to back this up and this book fails to reference anything with regards to this. It’s more likely that HIIT does NOT build lean muscle but it does prevent the further break down of lean muscle tissue that you would otherwise find with other cardio methods such as distance running etc. The bottom line really is, that if muscle building is your goal, then yes, you should be doing HIIT, but you also should be lifting weights – Something which astonishingly this book says “don’t bother” with – A book entitled Shed and Shred.

The sample workouts we are provided with are all pretty similar and only contain one exercise for the duration, which would be fine if running, cycling etc, but no, that’s not what we’re told to do. Doing only jumping jacks every Friday for a month will be soul destroying and nobody is likely to stick to that. HIIT is supposed to be fun.

We are given hardly any info on the many benefits of HIIT and nothing on tailoring workouts to your own fitness level. Indeed, only ten exercises are mentioned in the entire book.

Conclusion – Yes, HIIT is the best training method out there for weight loss and a lot of other exercise aims. But you’ll be left none the wiser from this book. Buy one of the other more substantial books on this subject. I returned this book for a refund.

I really enjoyed the eBook. It was well written from fact, not just a herd mentality ( doing what everybody is doing). He gave very good example of some popular exercise programs and HIIT: Shed and Shed was the best eBook I have read concerning the real truth behind exercising. I am so glad that there is information finally being written base on some hard facts. HYPE....I Never believed it that one needed to exercise 6 day a week and do it for one hour. There is scientific proof that this is no good for the body and will in the long run break the body down and due damage.

I really enjoyed reading this book about the HIIT method. The author answered a lot of questions about why some of the fads in exercise are not working and why the HIIT method is so effective. He explained how it is beneficial for more than just losing weight which is what a lot of programs aim for. HIIT increases the metabolism, helps you lose weight and helps you tone all the different muscle groups. He also did very well at describing the exercises in detail and the images helped with that as well. Great book1
