Présentation de l'éditeur

Build and Distribute Your Game Using an HTML5 Game Engine

As mobile hardware improves, HTML5 is gradually being used for gaming apps and a growing industry of game engines has begun to support it. HTML5 Game Engines: App Development and Distribution presents an introduction to development with HTML5 game engines as well as an in-depth look at popular engines. Along with downloadable example projects for each engine, the book provides techniques for packaging and distributing the final app to all the major platforms.

Get Hands-On Guidance through Practical Techniques and Examples

The book is divided into three parts. The first one covers the essentials of HTML5, discusses development strategies and techniques, and takes you through a basic pong game running in the browser with no dependencies. The second part implements four games using the Crafty, EaselJS, Impact, and Turbulenz game engines. In the third part, the author describes how several of these games are distributed on platforms, such as the Chrome Web Store, Apple iOS App Store, Google Play Store, and Facebook.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Overview of HTML5 Game Building Tools 22 mai 2014

Reading this book has been a surprise. Most books of this type tend to be dry and overly complex. This book was a pleasant read that kept me engaged as I was presented with several different game engines and distribution types.

In the first part, the book explains the problems that developers have with HTML/HTML5 and general game development. No sooner are you done with the history then you are presented with a simple HTML5 game implementation without an underlying engine. Although it starts with a simple game of Pong, it shows all the major components of a game and what a programmer must do to overcome various shortcomings.

In the second part, the book goes over several HTML5 engines. Again, very simple but complete examples are used to show how each one works. The last of the engines is even a WebGL 3D engine. The examples are straight forward and stay on topic. Graphics, sound, and controls are all there for making a game. Although a reader may be tempted to use a different engine than those covered, very common patterns quickly appear and should carry over to other (including future) engines.

In the third part, the book presents many methods and options for distributing your final product. For me, I found this section to be the most educational. I was surprised at the number of options for getting a product out. Plus, the author goes into precise details on how to implement each and every one of the distribution methods. The number of hours saved by reading these instructions can easily cover the price of the book.

Overall, a good read. The book may appear shorter than most, but it packs a punch and does not waste your time. I recommend this book for someone starting a new HTML5 project and wants to jump start their project.

Well written with easy to understand examples & tutorials. He seems to do a good job of updating the companion website to keep up with changes in software, code, etc.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the finest technical texts ever written! 2 mai 2014

Of all of the books I’ve read about HTML game development (and I’ve read many), Dan Nagle delivers, as I feel this is the quintessential text on the subject. Dan’s mastery of the subject is apparent from the first page as he skillfully leads the reader through the essentials of HTML5 and demonstrates Pong running in a browser with no dependencies, leaving the reader thirsty for more. You think Mr. Nagle stops there? Oh hell no, then he hits you like a ton of bricks with four different games using four different engines! Unlike the hacks who’ve previously attempted to write on the subject, only Dan Nagle’s “HTML5 Game Engines: App Development and Distribution” provides the definitive view of HTML5 game development that even the most discerning technologist would find both informative and entertaining. A once in a generation text, this volume is destined to become a textbook staple to be enjoyed for generations to come.
