Descriptions du produit

Two world wars, the Civil Rights movement, and a Jheri curl later, Blacks in America continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair. From the antebellum practice of shaving the head in an attempt to pass as a "free" person to the 1998 uproar over a White third-grade teacher's reading of the book Nappy Hair, the issues surrounding Black hair continue to linger as we enter the twenty-first century. Tying the personal to the political and the popular, Hair Story takes a chronological look at the culture behind the ever-changing state of Black hair - from fifteenth-century Africa to the present-day United States. Hair Story is the book that Black Americans can use as a benchmark for tracing a unique aspect of their history, and it's a book that people of all races will celebrate as the reference guide for understanding Black hair.

"Our Story" is more like it ! 22 février 2014

This book not only informs and educates us on our hair , but tells us about our history in this country from the beginning up to now. These two ladies did an excellent job on giving us wealth of information on our "Hair Story". This book is a up close and personal look at where we get all of our beliefs , myths and rituals, breaking it all down so we can formulate our own opinion on where to go from here. LOOOOOOOOVE IT GREAT READ!

Black hair is Political 6 mai 2014

I have spent an entire life trying to educate Black women on the fact that their hair is beautiful. Making the choice to change the texture is a personal one. However, I hope that Black women don't make the choice as a correction to their hair texture. There is too much self-hate in that. The point being natural Black hair is beautiful and should not be shame filled. Natural is the essence of who we are. I love my natural hair. [...]

The Story of Black Hair 7 octobre 2014

This is a great book on the story Black hair & the social & racial impact of it.

Originally published in 2000, this is the story of Black hair, going back from Africa to the present. It explains how historically people of color were made to feel that our natural hair was bad as well as the rise of Black-owned companies which marketed "straighten perm" to the Black community & the impact of Black hair on American culture, which is still largely Euro-centered based.

One of the things I'm glad this book talked about is the "Nappy Hair" issue from the late 1990s (a White teacher give a book named "Nappy Hair" to her mostly Black & Latino 3rd grade class which caused outcry from some in the community at large-mainly from those who never read the book-which was written by a Black woman who's interviewed for this book.) as well as the Sesame Street song "I Love My Hair" which despite being written by an Italian American (who wrote it for his African-born adopted daughter) became popular with Black women.

All in all, a great read. It's just under 250 pages so it's a quick read. Also there's photos & stories of different hairstyles like the rise & fall of the Jheri Curl. If you want to understand the story surrounding Black hair, then this is a must read.

Excellent hair bible. This story is my story; I'm newly natural and this helped me get clarity on hair issues from day one to where I am right now.

It is quite a history lesson for those of us who did not get much in the way of Africian American History in school. Very well written and informative.
