Merci.

HASH(0x9d511810) étoiles sur 5 Baroque Opera at its Finest 28 juillet 2001
Par B. J. Miceli - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Having heard this recording probably 100 times, I can confidently recommend it to anyone interested in hearing Sutherland in the role which earned her the sobriquet "La Stupenda" from Italian audiences in the 1960's. Her voice is astonishingly powerful and agile. Furthermore, Sutherland's natural grandeur and command make the sorceress Alcina appropriately larger than life. Importantly, she and the rest of the cast sing out in vivid, colorful voices far removed from the anemic "period" sound heard so often today. Granted, the score is cut and Renee Fleming also sings a glamourous and gorgeous Alcina (complete) on CD, but her liberal use of portamento and rubato and her fruity vibrato are more appropriate to Bellini than Handel (but the smudgy coloratura is wrong for both!). By contrast, Sutherland avoids these devices, singing with real Baroque style (even if her diction is a little muddy at times!)which balances Italianate warmth with technical precision. This is one of Sutherland's best recordings and serves Handel's music well.

The magnitude of singing in this Alcina is second to none. The Joan Sutherland here is a young one. And we all know her what a phenomenal singer she was before Esclamonde(1974) destroyed her voice. Here, in 1960 something, it is the most glowing, sumptuous, just simply gorgeous soprano to ever come out of a person's mouth. It is as silvery and clear as it can be. And the squillo is in full force.
Yep, it's all here, the amazing coloratura, the celebrated upper register to the full voice high E, and the awesome accuracy of pitch. No wonder they call her the "Voice of the Century".
Freni is here, and she is lovely. I bet you've never heard her sound like that. She's no Sutherland. But she's definitely at least as good a lyric soprano as Price or Caballe.
A greatly underrated recording. The music is glorious. In my opinion, it is as good as the other great Handel opera Julius Caesar. I hope I spelled it right. If you love Baroque, it doesn't get any better than this.

A stellar cast heading by the supreme artist, Joan Sutherland. She had, indeed, the most beautiful soprano during her youth. With a supporting cast such as this, how can this Alcina lose? Of these great artists, next to Sutherland, Freni is the most lovely. All in all, fantastic singing of some of the most beautiful music that Handel ever wrote.

Yes, some of the arias are shorn of the "B" sections, the text is cut and Morgana's showpiece gets appropriated by Alcina, but what singing! As wonderful as Sutherland is, to me the high point in the dream cast is Monica Sinclair's standout singing of contralto coloratura. Without this document, we'd have a distorted picture of her achievement as primarily the greatest Gilbert and Sullivan contralto predator since Brenda Lewis. What a magnificent singer! The cast reads like a Who's Who of great singers of the last 50 years - including Berganza, Freni and Alva. I have Dame Joan's live version as well and the more "authentic" versions with Fleming and the much lamented Arleen Auger. The latter is my reference recording (the Fleming/Christie I can pretty much do without) but Sutherland/Bonygne is where I turn when I want to hear the opera performed in the grand manner.

First of all, Alcina is one of my favorite Handelian operas. I love the storyline, the magic, the fire of a queen cast aside. It is very fascinating to me. I first heard this recording in the seventies as a teenager, instantly fell in love with not only the music, but also the performance itself. Sure I have heard many Alcinas since then both in live performance as well as recordings. I even own the controversial "semi-pornagraphic" DVD which has a lot of Alcina lovers talking! Still, I come home to this version, for this is where my heart is.

Some of the music that stands out in my thinking is the opening chorus, "Questo." I love the hunting horns in the wonderful key of F. I miss this chorus in subsequent versions. Monica Sinclair sings "E gelosia" with such fire that it leaves me breathless everytime I hear it.
Tereza Berganza sings wonderfully as a confident Ruggiero: "Sta Nell' Ircana," Of course Dame Joan shines as the Handelian diva in several places: "Ah Mio Cor" and "Ruggiero Crudel." I especially love the muted strings in Ah Mio Cor. I know the purists hate the idea, but I'm purists, the effect is stunning! It leaves the scorned Alcina in such raw vulnerability.

Yes, I know there are many newer versions that are out there now-and I am not criticizing them, but to me, they lack the interpretation to bring this beautiful score to the place where it belongs. The balanced combination of passion, fire, and bel canto(not shrill singing!) lifts this performance to a wonderful listening experience. Real heart and soul! That's my two cents!
